Human Potential x Temple Grandin Reflections

Human Potential x Temple Grandin Reflections

Caroline Croft Estay (Co-Founder & Chief Potential Officer)

A few weeks ago our Jackson Hole farm had the opportunity to host an icon. Dr. Temple Grandin is a decorated academic known for her progressive work in animal science. She’s also a bestselling author, professor and autism activist. Her most recent work champions neurodiversity in the workplace and the importance of bringing different kinds of thinkers together to solve problems, from computer programming, to manufacturing, to farming.

?

In Dr. Grandin’s words:

“Studies have shown that diverse teams will outperform homogeneous teams. If you’ve ever attended a meeting where nothing gets solved, it may be because there are too many people who think alike.”

?

At Vertical Harvest, we champion diversity in the workplace. Each person on our team possesses a unique set of experiences, skills, and insights that, when harnessed, can lead to innovation and creative solutions like growing tomatoes in the dead of winter and creating meaningful work for people with disabilities.

?

As the Chief Potential Officer and co-founder of the Grow Well model and workforce movement, I have the privilege of witnessing the boundless human potential within our company on a daily basis. Every day brings new stories of growth, achievement, and empowerment that reaffirm our commitment to nurturing the potential in each individual.

?

Recently, I witnessed a co-worker taking their first steps into the digital world, successfully using an iPad to clock in and record their workday. This achievement may seem small, but it was a milestone on their journey toward digital literacy and empowerment.

?

Likewise, a co-worker was recently promoted to a department lead, just one step away from management. Witnessing her ascend to this role and confidently address the entire team for the very first time is a testament to the transformative power of our Grow Well model. It underscores our belief in the potential for growth and leadership within each employee, regardless of their starting point.

?

These experiences serve as reminders of the impact we have on individuals' lives and the broader community. They motivate us to continue fostering a workplace culture that values personal and professional development, inclusivity, and empowerment.

?

When Dr. Grandin toured our farm, she got to experience the enthusiasm of our workforce firsthand. Co-facilitated by two VH farm associates, Johnny surveyed the microgreens and explained how each one contributed to the farm's ecosystem, while Thibaud showed us his personal favorite varieties. It was a beautiful intersection of perspectives and was one of the most enriching experiences of my career at VH.

?

Our beloved neurodiverse farm workforce was proud to share the tour with Dr Grandin.? We hope she was able to witness the tremendous power of diversity on the farm and the remarkable impact that effective teamwork can have in creating meaningful and transformative interactions. It was an unforgettable demonstration of what can be achieved when we celebrate and harness the strength of our differences, leaving an indelible mark on all those fortunate enough to witness it.

?

At Vertical Harvest, every success story we witness fuels our commitment to realizing the full potential of every member of our team. It is a privilege to be a part of an organization where these moments of growth and empowerment are not only encouraged but celebrated as a fundamental part of our mission. Together, we are creating a workplace where human potential knows no bounds, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute to our collective success.
