The Human Operating System

The Human Operating System

In a world where technology increasingly shapes our work environments, it's crucial to remember the irreplaceable value of human beings. I recently attended a presentation created by Kerry Mulcrone- MIRM, MCSP, CMP that was titled, The Irreplaceable Human. She said, "your culture is your human software." This really resonated with me, as it truly captures the essence of how we, as humans, operate in today's modern workplace.

Just like a computer, we need to fully unplug, shut down and reboot our hardware from time to time. We also need breaks to recharge, reflect, and regain our focus. Just as software needs updates to stay relevant and efficient, we also need to continuously update, learning new skills to thrive in our rapidly evolving world.

And when it comes to our teams and culture, we need to have an antivirus software in place to protect our organization and our people from harmful viruses in the form of individuals whose behavior or attitudes can disrupt the culture and productivity of a company if left unchecked.

As a leader, it's your job to ensure that you and those around you are operating at maximum capacity without running out of RAM. Here are five ways you can lead and manage your human software effectively:

  1. Recharge and Reboot: Make sure you and your team take breaks and recharge during the work day. Your battery will NOT last all day long. So don't wait until you are fully drained before plugging in. Make sure there is access to outlets to do that throughout the day.
  2. Install Updates: To operate at maximum capacity, we must ensure continuous learning and growth. Invest in training programs for your team to update and up level their skills and stay relevant in a rapidly changing environment.
  3. Fully shut down every night: As a leader, prioritize your well-being to set an example for your team. People need to be able to fully clear their brains and be allowed to let go of stress, deadlines and goals.
  4. Install Antivirus Software: Toxic behavior can spread like a virus in your organization. As a leader, it's crucial to address these issues promptly before they take over your entire operating system.
  5. Have an open API for integrations: Just as software systems rely on collaboration to function effectively, so does your team. Encourage collaboration, open communication, and mutual support among team members and departments to enhance productivity and innovation.

By viewing your organization as a complex system of human software, you can better understand the importance of nurturing and maintaining your culture. As a leader, your role is to ensure that your human software is operating at its best, unencumbered by outdated systems or harmful viruses.

Remember that your culture is not just a reflection of your organization—it is your organization.
