My 14,000 word, peer-reviewed entry, Human Needs: Overview, has now been published as an open access, freely accessible article by the Encyclopedia of Social Work, published by Oxford University Press and the National Association of Social Workers. It is now available at the link provided here or if you care to type the link: https://tinyurl.com/hgffctl. This article is relevant to the Council on Social Work Education's requirement for "knowledge of theories of human need and social justice." Upon request I can provide my partial theory of social injustice, now under review. In short, I theorize that injustice is produced when oppression, dehumanization and/or exploitation create systematic inequality in the opportunities of people or communities to address our universal human needs in our culturally and individually preferred manners. This results in unmet basic human needs for health and autonomy (see Gough 2015 and an earlier open access version) and unmet psychological needs for autonomy, competence and relatedness (see Ryan and Deci, 2000). Unmet needs lead to unjustly restricted levels of participatory capacity, resulting in high likelihood of serious harm.
