Human Information Processing
Model Card, Moran & Newell, 1983
In 1983 Card, Moran and Newel describe the Human Information Processing Model
Short-Term Memory
Ultra-fast memory: retention lasts no more than seconds. For example: listening to someone dictate a phone number, at that moment we remember the numbers, but when a few seconds pass we are unable to remember.
Working memory or short-term memory: it is understood as a cognitive component linked to memory, which allows the temporary storage of information with limited capacity.
Through short-term memory, we store essential information for solving problems, for using quick thinking or elaborating behaviors (which can be forgotten below). Example: Where was the car parked?
Long-Term Memory
Long-term (or permanent) memory is responsible for storing all of a person's knowledge. The access time for information retrieval is much longer, compared to other types of memory. This memory can last for days, months, years or a lifetime. Consolidation is the process of storing new information in long-term memory.
