Human Flourishing in the Era of AI: WISE Summit 2023

The World Innovation Summit for Education in Doha recently brought together brilliant minds from around the globe to explore the profound impact artificial intelligence (AI) is having on education. With the theme of "human flourishing in an era of AI," the conference delved into the crucial role education plays for a world of sustainable development and peace especially amidst ongoing conflict in the region. Many conversations highlighted the potential of AI to automate mundane tasks, enabling educators and learners to focus on higher-order thinking and deliver targeted learning experiences.?

The crucial reflection present for me is we must return to the real purpose of learning and life. With these god-like technologies, how do we create learning experiences with young people (and adults) that are effective for intellectual mastery and also human-centred, especially with technology driving cognitive augmentation. This was the strong message I shared in our Doha Debate alongside the brilliant Isabelle Hau from the 美国斯坦福大学 Accelerator for Learning and Nadeem Nathoo from The Knowledge Society (TKS) , masterfully hosted by Rawaa …. I’m so looking forward to its release in early 2024. Stay tuned!

The roles that schools, the private sector, and society might play in the emerging direct-to-learner models of education were explored. Yet the stance I shared that resonates deeply with me is remembering that ‘education’ is multifaceted, encompassing social, emotional, and cognitive dimensions, which all need to be honored in the full thriving of a human being. I believe it is by cultivating all these elements, we can truly unlock the power of education.

Here’s my take on some of the things I learned at WISE2023:

The potential for AI to revolutionise education by automating routine tasks.

While this does support the idea of doing the same thing just faster, AI will increasingly takeover routine tasks that can liberate educators to focus on more advanced and creative aspects of the learning process. By leveraging AI tools, teachers will be able to streamline administrative duties, grading, and data analysis, allowing them to invest their time and energy into the art of teaching and learning, and designing innovative learning experiences. I can only imagine that this shift also promises to foster deeper relationships and connections between teachers and students, as well as the ability to cater for all to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and collaboration among students. (Anyone remember the power of Socratic Seminar?)

The evolution of Higher education and Vocational education.

Insightful work of presenters and conversations also shed light on the evolving landscape of higher education and vocational training in the era of AI. With technology rapidly advancing, traditional models of higher education are being challenged as much as early years, primary and high school. The conference explored the potential of online learning platforms, personalised curricula, AI tutors, and lifelong learning opportunities to bridge the gap between academia and industry. By aligning education with the demands of an ever-changing job market, individuals can acquire the skills needed to thrive in a world augmented by AI. The possibilities here are big, and universities are paying attention.

Leveling the playing field in education.?

By reducing the burden of time-consuming administrative work, teachers can allocate more attention to students who require additional support or personalised learning plans. This shift has the potential to address educational inequalities and create a more inclusive and equitable education system.?

Increased social and emotional connection with teachers and learning guides.

The integration of AI in education continues to raise questions about the role of educators in the future. While AI can enhance the learning experience, it cannot replace the social and emotional connection that teachers provide. The human ‘touch’ (which can even be the human thought or consideration) is the cornerstone of education, and as we navigate the era of AI, it is crucial to strike a balance between technology and human interaction. By embracing AI as a tool rather than a replacement, we can create a harmonious educational environment that can maximise the potential of both learners and educators.

The Purpose Motive.

The future of learning holds immense promise, but the same can’t be said for outdated models of instruction, timetables, teacher-directed models of pedagogy and the “schooling of kids”. By embracing AI and leveraging its capabilities, we can transform education into an even more dynamic and personalised experience. However, we must remain focused on the why, ensuring that the integration of AI does not compromise the essential behind education. The conference's discussions emphasised the importance of preserving the social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of learning. As we forge ahead, we must keep in mind that education is not merely a transfer of knowledge but a holistic process that shapes individuals' identities, fosters empathy, and cultivates critical thinking, and is also at the heart of peaceful societies and a peaceful world.

Well done to the whole WISE team for providing a platform for educators, thinkers and doers to explore the transformative potential of AI in education.

What a useful description of your experience at WISE23 Louka. Inspiring how the discussion leads us to think beyond technology as a magnifier to where it provides space for creativity. If art inspires science that informs engineering how will AI not just speed up the process but open new ways of human flourishing?

Appreciate this in particular, Louka: “As we forge ahead, we must keep in mind that education is not merely a transfer of knowledge but a holistic process that shapes individuals' identities, fosters empathy, and cultivates critical thinking, and is also at the heart of peaceful societies and a peaceful world.”
