The Human Connection

The Human Connection

As many organizations flex to support remote work teams and leverage technology in new ways, there seems to be a mindset of disconnection many employees are experiencing. Mindsets are based upon a system of beliefs that are unique to each individual journey. It is also important to point out that the mindset an individual holds is true for that individual. Mindsets should not be measured as right or wrong, but simply a reflection of a belief that an individual holds in which experiences are defined. Our thoughts (mindset/beliefs) creates the reality we experience.

Recognizing that each and every human being on the planet is experiencing a disruption to everyday life, it is important to listen to what challenges your employee(s) may be experiencing while adjusting to remote work. Whether your employee is struggling with countless Zoom meetings, worry/fear of the future or simply the uncertainty of this point in time...taking a listening and understanding approach will strengthen the shared human connection. As human beings, we feel more connected to others through shared experiences (i.e. face to face conversation, experiencing a conference or group activity together) which often builds and strengthens peer to peer relationships. In our human interaction, we read body language, sense the energy in the room and form new beliefs based upon the interactions we experience.

The best way to reset a limiting belief or mindset that threatens to break the human connection is to be intentional about connecting. Our ability to connect with others to strengthen the human connection does not stop simply because remote work is now required. Rather, we must recognize that every colleague, remote work team and leader out there is experiencing the same shared experience that you are right now. We are all part of a shared experience in which we can choose what mindset we want to have as we move forward.

Today, take a moment to look inward and reflect on what limiting beliefs you might be carrying. Identify what these beliefs are. Write them down and ask yourself, "Are these beliefs helping me to strengthen my own human connection to others?" Then, take a moment to decide what new beliefs you want to form during this time. Reflecting on how each of us can make a conscious choice to longer view our human connection as limited will help you tap into the unlimited potential that has always been there.

Wise words, Amber. What I miss is the wave of energy that I feel when I work around others who are busy doing important things--the buzz of the hive. I know that the hive is still abuzz, but it's harder to hear and feel from a distance.
