I am often laughed at when I tell people this with complete honesty and sincerity. However, even at the cost of sounding like a broken record I have gone on and on. Now, surprisingly this statement has become a head turner. This is because I do not say this to seek attention or for getting a heads up for my main story.
As more and more people are realizing the volume and impact on Water Scarcity, they are becoming more open to innovative ideas as plausible solutions. Up until the late 90s, if someone were to tell us that we will have this compact unit called a smart phone that would literally serve as one's Person Friday, we would only offer a loud and humiliating burst of laughter in response.
Harvesting Air for generating 100% safe, pure, and natural water has a long history.
A deep understanding of why we are at the cusp of water vanishing completely from the earth is extremely crucial to set the context for the need for innovative alternative solutions
Water unfortunately has always been taken for granted with scant respect to its value and indispensability:
Industrialization/Urbanization/Deforestation/Contamination/Population Growth/Soil Abuse/Excessive use of non-recyclable and microplastics and dumping in Oceans, Surface Water Bodies, Mangroves, Wetlands etc./Continuing farming practices using excessive water/Purification Technologies such as RO resulting in colossal waste of natural water/Defunct and Decaying Water supplying Infrastructure, Lack of authentic data on Quality/Quantity/Losses in transit/Lack of education, awareness, training on Water Conservation & Water Use Efficiency, Policy & Governance Issues, Climate Change, Extraction beyond any sane imagination are some of the major factors responsible for our staring at a waterless planet.
Extreme weather events are making water more scarce, more unpredictable, more polluted or all three. These impacts throughout the water cycle threaten sustainable development, biodiversity, and people’s access to water and sanitation.
Flooding and rising sea levels are contaminating land and water resources with saltwater or faecal matter, causing alarming damage to water and sanitation infrastructure, such as waterpoints, wells, toilets and wastewater treatment facilities.
Glaciers, ice caps and snow fields are rapidly disappearing. Meltwater feeds many of the great river systems. Volatility in the cryosphere can affect the regulation of freshwater resources for vast numbers of people in lowland areas.
Droughts and wildfires are destabilizing communities and triggering civil unrest and migration in many areas. Destruction of vegetation and tree cover exacerbates soil erosion and reduces groundwater recharge, increasing water scarcity and food insecurity.
Growing demand for water increases the need for energy-intensive water pumping, transportation, and treatment, and has contributed to the degradation of critical water-dependent carbon sinks such as peatlands. Water-intensive agriculture for food production, particularly meat, and for growing crops used as biofuels, can further exacerbate water scarcity.
Sustainable, affordable and scalable water solutions include:
Access to safe and clean potable water is the only sustainable way to release pressure on already diminishing natural water sources. The water levels have gone down drastically in all major aquifers around the world. Drinking water has contamination threatening the health of the habitats.
A lot of proactive on the ground action is underway to resolve the crisis but much more is needed as doing nothing is not an option. Alternative sources of water are needed pronto.
The MEGHDOOT AWG REVOLUTION
Water has only one substitute- Water.
Maithri Aquatech ,?an organization founded in 2016 under the Make in India initiative, focuses on providing sustainable and eco-friendly clean and pure water solutions to provide millions of people the access to purest potable water available on tap anytime, anywhere.?The company?has now become India's largest producer of water from Atmospheric Humidity using its advanced Air to Water Generators (AWGs) technology. It has aptly been named MEGHDOOT!
There is roughly 2 million trillion liters of water as humidity in our atmosphere and harnessing a mere 1-2% of this would be sufficient to meet the needs of life on this planet. This can be totally decentralized to produce water wherever needed at scale. Besides making any country / city / community water secure - it is certain to create an unprecedented positive impact on the Environment and most other Sustainable Development Goals 2030.
Climate-resilient development is becoming progressively more challenging with every increment of warming. Access to safe and clean potable water is the only sustainable way to release pressure on already diminishing natural water sources.
MEGHDOOT? is a solution which can support institutions by transforming them into water stewards while supporting their Sustainability goals.
· Made in India, for the Planet: MEGHDOOT? is a nature-based solution which mimics the natural water cycle by generating water exclusively from air, with Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD).
· The Best Water, Anywhere and Everywhere: Consistently generates high-quality, microbe-free, mineral enriched potable water meeting WHO and Indian drinking water quality standards anywhere.
· Affordable: One of the most affordable and energy-efficient AWG solutions available globally.
· Dependable: Rains are less predictable due to Climate Change. MEGHDOOT? is a dependable alternative of water which can generate water when needed.
· Scalable: MEGHDOOT? can meet requirements of water from tens to millions of liters everyday.
· Rapid Creation of Water Infrastructure: Solution can be rapidly deployed and redeployed as portable water infrastructure even in the remotest of locations.
MEGHDOOT AWG MECHANISM
Essentially the process mimics the rainwater principle.
Here's an overview of the process:
1. Air Intake /Air Filter:
Ambient Air is drawn into the machine through a filter to remove dust and impurities ensuring that only clean air enters the system.
2. Cooling and Condensation
(a) Cooling Coils: The filtered air passes over cooled coils. The temperature of the coils is
lowered below the dew point of the air, causing the water vapor in the air to condense
into liquid water on the coils.
(b) Dew Point: The temperature at which air becomes saturated with moisture and
water droplets begin to form.
3. Water Collection
Collection Tray: The condensed water droplets collect on the surface of the coils and
drip into a collection tray. This tray is designed to channel the water into a storage tank.
4. Filtration and Purification
(a) Primary Filtration: The collected water passes through multiple filters to remove any
remaining impurities.
(b) Sediment Filter: Removes larger particles like dust and dirt.
(c) Carbon Filter: Removes chlorine, organic compounds, and improves taste.
(d) UV Sterilization: Uses ultraviolet light to kill bacteria, viruses, and other
microorganisms.
5. Storage, Dosing and Distribution
(a) Storage Tank: The purified water is stored in a tank within the unit. The size of
the tank varies based on the capacity of the model.
(b) Dosing and Mineralization: After initial filtration, the water is dosed with proprietary
salts and minerals. This step involves carefully adding specific amounts of minerals and
salts to the purified water. The purpose is threefold:
o Taste Enhancement: Adding minerals can significantly improve the taste of the
water, making it more pleasant to drink.
o Health Benefits: Certain minerals are essential for health. Adding minerals such
as calcium, magnesium, and potassium can enhance the nutritional value of the
water.
o Stability: Minerals can help stabilize the water's pH level, making it less acidic
or basic, which is beneficial for long-term storage and consumption.
(c) Dispensing: The unit is equipped with a dispensing mechanism to provide access to the
stored water. This can include hot and cold water taps, depending on the model.
Energy Source
? Power Supply: MEGHDOOT can run on electricity or powered by renewable energy sources such as solar panels to enhance sustainability and reduce operational costs.
Efficiency Factors
? Humidity and Temperature: The efficiency of MEGHDOOT depends on the ambient humidity and temperature. Higher humidity levels and moderate temperatures improve water production rates.
? Maintenance: Regular maintenance, such as cleaning or replacing ?lters, is essential to ensure optimal performance and water quality.
