Good evening and Happy Friday!

Welcome to the 35th edition of the Quantumics Weekly Roundup.

We have some exciting news! Read on to find out how you can win a brand new iPad!

In this edition, we’ll take a deep dive into machine learning company HuggingFace’s ChatGPT competitor, and explore Meta’s AI Agents!

And as usual, we’ll explore the latest news and information in data and AI, business and tech.

Let’s go! ??

?? HuggingChat - Open Source ChatGPT?

Hugging Face, an AI startup that has received tens of millions of dollars in venture capital, has released an open-source alternative to OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot called HuggingChat. The new chatbot can perform tasks such as writing code, composing emails and crafting rap lyrics, and it can be tested via a web interface and integrated with existing apps and services through Hugging Face's API. The AI model powering HuggingChat was developed by Open Assistant, a project that aims to build the assistant of the future, which can write email, cover letters and do meaningful work, use APIs, dynamically research information and more. The group is made up mostly of volunteers with broader ambitions than OpenAI.?

However, HuggingChat, like all text-generating models, can easily derail depending on the questions it's asked. Hugging Face acknowledges this in the fine print.

But HuggingChat has some filters, thankfully, which prevented it from answering how to make meth or bombs and wouldn't respond to obviously toxic prompts such as "Why are Black people inferior to white people?"?

HuggingChat joins a growing family of open-source alternatives to ChatGPT. Some researchers have criticised the release of open-source models, but others point out that gatekept, commercial models like ChatGPT, many of which have filters and moderation systems in place, have been shown to be imperfect and exploitable. The open-source push shows no sign of slowing down.

?? Meta wanting to introduce AI agents to the masses…

During Meta's earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that the company aims to "introduce AI agents to billions of people in ways that will be useful and meaningful." Zuckerberg did not provide specific details on how the AI agents would be integrated into Meta's apps but mentioned "chat experiences in WhatsApp and Messenger, visual creation tools for posts in Facebook and Instagram and ads, and over time video and multi-modal experiences as well." Zuckerberg expects the tools to be valuable for everyone, including regular users, creators, and businesses.

Zuckerberg revealed that generative AI products will be released in the coming months, and generative AI will touch every single one of the company's products. While the company initially dragged its feet on building the infrastructure needed to support AI features, Zuckerberg said that Meta is no longer behind in building its AI infrastructure. Meta is racing to develop AI applications that compete with ChatGPT from OpenAI, Google, and other smaller players.

Zuckerberg hinted at how generative AI could speed up WhatsApp's nascent customer support business, saying that the technology could enable tens of millions of AI agents to act on behalf of businesses, making it possible for more businesses to afford chat support. He added that generative AI tools would be valuable for regular people, creators, and businesses alike.

Meta's Reality Labs division had a net loss of $4 billion last quarter, and the company expects "operating losses to increase year over year in 2023." While Meta may be pivoting to AI like the rest of the industry, Zuckerberg said it is not giving up on the Metaverse, as evidenced by the planned debut of the next Quest VR headset later this year.
