HTTOTW - Freaky Economics

HTTOTW - Freaky Economics

As some of you may know, one of the things that the Decusatio Group of Companies team do each Friday at 7am is we host our "How To Take Over The World" sessions.

We originally launched these under COVID as we were growing our team but didn't have the opportunity to interact on a daily basis face-to-face. The idea was to learn a little bit more about the skills on the team and make sure we all knew what other team members were working on.

At the start of the year, we started running these on YouTube to allow our clients and suppliers to join us if they wanted to - you can find the PlayList here - and then more recently, we added in a new dynamic where we had to write up a summary of our presentation and share it on LinkedIn.

This week Ané-Sonet Human and I presented with Ane sharing some of her learnings from hiking in the Fish River Canyon. I introduced the team to "Freakonomics" and shared some "Freaky Economics" of my own.

You can watch the full presentation online here, but here's a summary of my presentation.

  1. If you had bought JSE-listed Thungela Resources when it was spun-off from Anglo American last year, you would be buying it for R20/year. This year you are getting a R60 dividend and massive capital appreciation.
  2. Did you know that Japan is currently running a competition to .... encourage young people to drink?!
  3. I looked at the Uber Eats South Africa Year in Review and while I share some of the most popular items, the single largest order was R15000 for 700 items
  4. I looked at some figures released by Debt Busters showing the level of indebtedness for people who sign up with them and earning over R20 000 per month
  5. Did you know that Peppers in South Africa are up over 100% in the last year?
  6. Mozambique is actually a very unique African country in that it exports 75% of the electricity it generates .... but it only 34% of the population has access to electricity
  7. Did you know that the first Blueberry batch exported out of South Africa was in 1992 and was valued at R9780 .... today we export over R1bn and it is one of the fastest growing horticulture industries in South Africa
  8. What is the most important company you've never heard of ....? ASML

Hope you enjoyed some of these facts and please feel free to add to some fun facts by posting in the comments below!
