GATHERING AND GRATITUDE IN THE MIDST OF A STORM

As we are embracing winter months and gathering as families and communities, the month of December evokes giving, bracing for New Year's reflection and upcoming change.

The pandemic thrust the healthcare industry into the eye of an epic storm. The combination of accelerating affordability challenges, access issues exacerbated by clinical staff shortages, lack of telehealth services and COVID-19, and limited population-wide progress on health equity and outcomes is staggering. This set of conditions has the potential to reorder our public health preparations and SAVE LIVES.

We often talk about tapping into the $1 trillion well of improvement opportunities by redesigning organizations for workforce optimization, accelerating productivity improvements, reshaping portfolios, innovating new business models, and reallocating constrained resources BUT we do not look at it from the?lens of equitable and inclusive design. The healthcare industry has lagged behind other industries in applying these human and equity centered practices.

HT4M NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT TO CHANGE THE PARADIGM?to align for success in the coming year.?We kick off December with re-engaging our membership, getting prepared to gather for our largest annual Future of Medicaid Innovation Summit at JP Morgan Health week (both in-person and online) and charting the path of the strategic planning we have been plotting in the storm pushing it into high gear.?Join us by financially contributing to our mission, volunteering, sending opportunities our way and/or dropping us words of encouragement as we FIGHT for the 87.5M Medicaid recipients, their caregivers, families and our communities.

?In the continued struggle?for equity,?

HT4M at HLTH

Reproductive Justice + Capital?

On November 13th, Health Tech 4 Medicaid partnered with RHIA Ventures to host an event on?Reproductive Justice + Capital?during the?HLTH 2022 conference in Las Vegas.?Reproductive Justice is a movement for equitable access to?quality care, resources and bodily autonomy regardless of race,?income, sexual orientation, gender, education, occupation, and other factors.?It involves actively?seeking out and removing systemic?social advantages and disadvantages that create?disparate outcomes between groups,?and?placing the voices of marginalized?people at the center of the conversation.

To foster a sexual, reproductive and maternal health market that produces equitable, accessible?outcomes for all, it is critical that we?invest in the voices of marginalized communities?and?prioritize centering them in decision making processes.?

During the event we?reflected on an assessment framework for advancing?equity in each of our organizations, and explored using an investment lens, a reproductive lens, and an equity lens to make a collective difference.

BLK @ HLTH?

We were thrilled to convene our BLK in Health community again at HLTH. BLK in Health is an active community of black professionals in the healthcare ecosystem, striving to harness our collective power to effect changes in our communities, companies, boardrooms, and other spaces.

On November 14th we hosted a screening and panel discussion of?"Color of Care," a?documentary detailing how COVID-19 exposed?the systemic racial inequities prevalent in America's healthcare system. Our panel was moderated by?Dr. Lisa K. Fitzpatrick MD, MPH, MPA , Founder of Grapevine Health and Member of the External Equity and Innovation Advisory Group at the American Medical Association , and featured? Adimika Meadows Arthur , Executive Director of Health Tech 4 Medicaid ,? Amaka Eneanya, MD, MPH, FASN , Head of Strategy and Operations at the Global Medical Office of Fresenius Medical Care , Kameron Matthews, MD, JD, FAAFP , Chief Health Officer at Cityblock Health , and? Kaakpema "KP" Yelpaala , CEO of InOn Health and Chief Impact Officer of StartUp Health .

Panelists agreed that the information shared in the documentary wasn't necessarily anything new.?“What was so frustrating during the pandemic was sitting back and seeing the ridiculous disparities and mortality rates…my reaction was to scream internally when those numbers were coming out, and then to say, what else were you expecting?”?said Amaka Eneanya.

?"A lot of this information isn't new. We should be talking about different things, like the equitable design of systems, products, delivery systems, and how we can all do a little better.?If you’re an entrepreneur and you have a great product that you believe is equitable and is serving the Medicaid population, how many people on Medicaid are you hiring? If you are a medical director at a company,?how are you making sure you’re pushing the envelope on who’s on your team, is your board diverse?”?emphasized Adimika Arthur.

Following the panel, we hosted a reception for our BLK @ HLTH community. We would like to thank everyone who attended!?If you weren't able to attend our BLK @ HLTH reception, or didn't get a chance to join our database,?be sure to join the BLK in Health database HERE.
