SAFER BRITISH FARMS
Agriculture consistently has the highest number of deaths and injuries of all sectors in Great Britain (per 100,000 workers). We want to make 2023 a safer year on our farms by working together.
Moving vehicles are the highest cause of deaths in British farming. These incidents account for 30% of all fatal injuries over the past 5 years.
That’s 48 avoidable tragedies that have destroyed families in the farming community. That’s why we’re asking farmers in England, Scotland and Wales to consider three simple areas of their daily farming activities.
SAFE FARM
Be smart. Keep people and vehicles apart.
It is important to keep people and moving vehicles apart to keep everyone safe. With 48 lives tragically lost in incidents involving moving vehicles on British farms in just the past 5 years, the lives of those on your farm really are in your hands.
Make a small change today, it could save you, your farm and your family.
We want to help you, and everyone on your farm to stay safe. Farms and farm vehicles come in all shapes and sizes. However, these simple safety tips will make your farm a safer place.
·??????Segregate vehicles and people with clearly marked routes and walkways to ?? keep them apart to avoid serious injuries.
·??????Use barriers and posts in high traffic areas to protect people and save lives.
·??????Use signage, good lighting and a high visibility clothing to help everyone be ????????seen on the farm.
USE THE HANDBRAKE EVERY TIME
Around 60% of runover incidents on British farms could have been prevented if a handbrake was used.
To prevent serious injury if your vehicle moves due to the terrain or gradient, follow the simple safe stop routine before you get out or off a vehicle; handbrake; gears in neutral; engine switched off and the key removed
Would you leave your car without putting on the handbrake? No matter what type of vehicle you’re using on your farm, make yours a safe stop and use the handbrake every time you leave the vehicle.
ALWAYS THINK VISIBILITY
Key to being a safe diver is visibility, whatever vehicle you are driving.?Whether it’s an ATV ( all- terrain vehicle), tractor, telehandler or farm equipment, follow these two simple steps to put visibility and safety at the front of your mind every time you drive.
·??????Ensure mirrors and windows on your vehicle are clean so you can see what is around you.
·??????When manoeuvring your vehicle, take a moment to consider where?your blind spots are, those seconds could avoid a tragic incident and a lifetime of regret.
FARM AND ESTATE HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING – UNIQUE ONLINE 3D INTERACTIVE COURSE
?What our Students had to say:
“I recently reviewed the Farm and Estates online hazard awareness training course offered by Risk & Safety Compliance Services Ltd. Without doubt this is one of, if not the best, H&S awareness courses of any type that I’ve ever completed compared to similar education and training as a SQEP in the Defence and Highways sectors. As well as introducing relevant legislation and accident statistics for context, it offered good working knowledge of common hazards and how to control them. ”
Portfolio NED Advisor & Consultant
John Kerner
“An excellent interactive course packed full of useful information and downloads. I really enjoyed the interactive 3D farm experience. This was a very interesting learning experience and I feel that I have taken a lot away from the course. Thank you.”

James Cuthbertson
“This course was brilliant. I like the way it is broken down into easily digested chapters with voice over video - great idea. The 3D farm was very interesting and added a fun element to the training. It was pleasing to be able to download each course chapter and information downloads. A great course. Thanks.”
Local Government Regulatory Manager New Zealand
Adrian Humphries
"I really enjoyed this short but sweet course. I think sometimes people doing courses of the same narrative can almost become lost in policy, procedures and law. This will unequivocally give any student the basic H&S/RASC awareness that they will require or want to understand in a great way. Engaging, refreshing and that E Library is next level" Rated 5 out of 5 ”

Farm vehicles - resources
The most common cause of serious and fatal injuries in agriculture involve moving and overturning vehicles. These webpages provide guidance on how to manage workplace transport issues.
Resources
Tractors & self-propelled vehicles
The majority of tractor and other farm vehicle fatal accidents are as a result of overturns when working on slopes or running over people.
All Terrain Vehicles
ATVs are designed to cope with a wide variety of terrain types, including steep slopes, but if used outside their safe operating parameters they can very rapidly become unstable.
Telehandlers
Telehandlers are widely used for moving materials and goods, but they are involved in about a quarter of all workplace transport accidents.
On the road
Travelling with a tractor mounted fore-end loader or telescopic materials handler on the public highway?
Pedestrian safety
Never approach or walk behind or beside a reversing vehicle. If you must approach, attract the driver's attention and get them to stop. Do not get on or off vehicles whilst they are moving.

1 年Surely it should be “ HSE launch yet another farm safety campaign”. Surely the HSE realise that pure words and slogans do not change a dynosaur culture Richard?

1 年I wrote a 47000 word final assesment for my Level 6 Diploma based on a Farming scenario, and living in West Cornwall where there are many farms as it is one of Cornwall's key industries, I hoped that I would be able to use this knowldge to support local farmers but after 2 mail drops, no interest at all! I learnt so much regarding health & safety in a Farming environment that would help local Farmers/ Owners to comply and will keep advertising my services I have even sent an email to my local MP offering a free advise sessions alongside his workshops, but again had no response; I contacted Cornish Mutual and the South West NFU - again no replies. Hopefully this campaign will nudge some to seek advice and work to prevent accidents or injuries occurring in their workplace ??
