HRW Deputy Director: Women's Rights Division
FULL-TIME JOB VACANCY
Deputy Director
Women's Rights Division
Program Department
Washington, D.C. Preferred
Application Deadline: October 11, 2021
The Opportunity
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Deputy Director in the Women's Rights Division (WRD). Founded in 1990, the Division leads HRW's work on women's rights globally. Our approach is deeply intersectional: we explicitly and intentionally look at how intersecting inequalities-based on gender, race, ethnicity, caste, nationality, Indigenous status, migration status, socio-economic status, sexual orientation and gender identity, ability, age, and other factors-contribute to marginalization and human rights violations. We work in partnership with local organizations in areas such as reproductive, economic and climate justice; economic, social and cultural rights; political rights, racial justice and reparations; violence, access to health, LGBT rights; and workers' rights.
The Deputy will report to and work alongside the Executive Director to ensure the highest standards of research and advocacy, develop and implement the division's strategy in collaboration with the WRD team, liaise with other parts of the organization, raise funds in support of the division, and help manage an increasingly growing staff focused on women's rights with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion; stress and resilience; and encouraging a healthy work/life balance. The position will be, preferably, based in Washington D.C. with other office locations considered.
Due to Covid-19, many of our global offices are currently closed or operating in reduced capacities. The successful candidate may be required to work remotely until offices fully re-open. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

?1.?Work closely with the Executive Director on providing day-to-day management and leadership of the WRD, supervising staff, and supporting an environment of collaborative work;
?1.?Work with the Executive Director in strategically guiding and advancing work on women's rights, supporting the Division with the design of strategic projects and development and editing of its different products;
?1.?Work with the Executive Director and HRW's Development and Outreach Department in identifying and cultivating new fundraising opportunities for the WRD work;
?1.?Design and implement with the WRD a multi-year strategy and implementation plan to advance our work on women's rights with a focus on the right to live free from violence; economic rights; and the right to health, with a strong focus on reproductive justice;
?1.?Act as a senior representative and advocate for the work of the division internally;
?1.?Act as a senior spokesperson and liaise with external actors to advocate on the work of the division;
?1.?Develop and strengthen collaborations between the Division and local organizations; and
?1.?Undertake other responsibilities as required.
