HRT Mechanic Trades in Wrench For Gardening Spade

Mechanic First Class Ick Chang has decided to put down his wrench for good and pick up a gardening spade. I sat down with Mr. Chang a few days before his retirement. After nearly 22 years of service at HRT, he’s excited about this next chapter in his life.

Mr. Chang started his tenure with HRT in December 2001 as a Mechanic Third Class. He said at the time he couldn’t imagine staying for more than two decades. Over the years he worked his way up the ranks and proved to be a valuable team member.

When I caught up with him, he was busy inspecting trollies, making sure they are ready for the busy summer season.

One of the things he enjoyed most about working at HRT was being able to participate in the annual Bus Roadeo. He was part of the winning maintenance team many times, going on to compete at the state level. His team was awarded first place at the Virginia Statewide Roadeo in 2016.

Mr. Chang also traveled to many different cities representing HRT in APTA’s International Bus Roadeo competitions. He said he always enjoyed meeting mechanics from other agencies and learning about their operations.

I asked Mr. Chang what advice he would give to a new mechanic just starting out at HRT. At first, he laughed, then he said, “You can’t just teach someone to be a mechanic. You have something in your blood. You have that mechanic stuff in your DNA.” He said being able to do the job of mechanic is more than knowhow, it’s “attitude” and “ethics.” He said it’s important to be able to read people, to read other mechanics and to know when they’re having an “off day.”

Mr. Chang jokingly told me he’s never retired before, so he doesn’t really have a plan for what to do next. He enjoys gardening and has a green house, and says he is looking forward to spending more time hanging out there and with his neighbors.

Mr. Chang’s last day with the agency was May 1. We wish him a happy retirement!?
