“HBCU MADE: A CELEBRATION OF THE BLACK COLLEGE EXPERIENCE” edited by Ayesha Roscoe
I’ve been a fan of Ayesha Roscoe since she was on the NPR Politics podcast. She’s the first time I experienced someone talking about politics who had similar life experiences as a Black millennial woman.??She brought much needed perspectives from the aggressively homogeneous point of views served up by NPR.
And that’s why I love, love, love?HBCU Made. I am a PWI alum (#HoyaSaxa), and yet I feel connected to every author who contributed an essay to this testament of Black excellence and community.
Roy Wood Jr’s story touched me the most. When the culture of a university is to love?and nurture all its students during their triumphs and their mistakes clutched my whole heart.
I was overwhelmed by Stacey Abrams story. The President of Spelman College had office hours!!??!! I cannot fathom a world where that is real much less a norm.
The story that will leave you in tears?is by. Nichole Perkins sharing how several HBCUs took in students whose HBCU had to temporarily close after a major natural disaster, and how that was honored at their graduation.
Gen Z is strongly embracing the HBCU journey and I’m excited for them. More and more generations to be "HBCU Made."
Recommendation: 1000% yes!!! It’s a Different World as non-fiction and it’s glorious.
