HR Updates & News

We are just in the middle of the year.?

But middle is not a very good word in the business world.

Business pundits ask us to avoid the?middle ground. It's the top management that gets all the attention, magazine quotes and the standing ovations. And the new workforce get all the pampering.

The middle management is often not given due credit for its performance.?They are seen as the gatekeepers, the advocates of status quo.

The truth is, they are the glue that binds the organisation together. They are the force which creates results out of higher management strategy.

Let's salute them!

Somewhere, In The Middle Of Nowhere!

So, who is a middle manager?

A study referred to in Harvard Business Review considers that--

Middle managers are two levels below the CEO and one level above line workers and frontline employees.

We can say these are the managers who may contribute to, but do not decide the strategy of the company. And they don't execute themselves, but supervise the teams to get the execution done.

In Praise Of Middle Managers...

HR must play a role in sensitising their organisation to the importance of middle management.

  • Middle managers are?not just?supervisors and information-passers. They are the enablers of actions and results.
  • They pass the information from the top management to their own team. But what's often overlooked is their role in?upward information flow:? Middle managers contribute the insights from the frontline that helps top management in devising the competitive strategies.?
  • Middle managers convert high level strategy into actionable tasks. They are the ones who negotiate on the part of the team for realistic budgets. Without them, there won't be any tangible results. Period.
  • When we talk about work-culture of the company, it's the middle managers who make sure everything runs as per plan, and people are also taken care of.?

Expert Quote!

Middle management plays a supremely crucial role in the success of a company.?Because for the vendors, partners and the frontline workers, the middle management?is?the company. The words of the middle managers are the words of the company to them.

If the top management understands it well, they would start taking the middle management's role more seriously.

A Middle Manager Is A Micro-CEO!

Middle managers affect the output of their teams and organizations, just as a CEO does for the entire company.?They have their own budgets, decision-making authority, and a team.

? If middle managers start seeing themselves as a CEO of their team rather than just a cog in the wheel of the organisation, they can accelerate their own growth, as well as the growth of the organisation!
