Happy new year!
We now have 15K plus subscribers to this newsletter. Thanks a ton for showing love and warm acceptance of this initiative.
Recently, we also celebrated our Foundation Day with much fanfare.
One must celebrate success, isn't it?
Our board of advisors reminded us not to be complacent. And following their line of thought, we chose the theme of this newsletter:?FIRE Yourself!
I feel it is an apt theme as we are about to begin a new year.
Wishing you an exceptional year ahead!
When A CEO Fired Himself!
We all know Intel by the phrase:?Intel inside.?The company is credited with single-handedly revolutionising the microprocessor industry.
Initially, it was in the memory chips business.?Japanese manufacturers were dumping low-priced memory chips in the US market. That made it tough for Intel to grow.
Co-founder Gordon Moore and CEO Andy Grove were searching for an appropriate response to this challenge.
The legend goes, CEO Andy Grove asked Co-founder Moore:
What if our board fires the two of us?
Now an interesting thing happened...They (metaphorically) fired themselves and walked out of the building, took a round of the block and came back in, as the new CEOs.
Then they looked at the situation from a new CEO's point of view. What would he do looking at the numbers, the market scenario and emerging trends?
They had the answer: To get out of memory chips, to work on microprocessors.
That's a powerful lens to see things!
Because a new CEO looks at the mess in the business and takes ruthless decisions to turnaround things. He is not bogged down by the baggage of the past. He doesn't need to justify old decisions.
So he or she makes objective decisions.
This helped Andy Grove & Gordon Moore. Helped Intel to grow exponentially. Helped the world by making computers faster and cheaper.?
All it needs is courage. The courage to own our own mistakes and decisions which are not producing the results we want.?
Does this apply only to CEOs?
It applies to us all. When we sit and take a note of our life achievements and struggles, we often blame others, and justify our past decisions with endless explanations— why things didn't work? Lack of budget, bandwidth, external factors.
But if we show the courage and the ability to leave the past behind, we can make new decisions. Decisions which are important for unleashing our true potential.
As an entrepreneur or an employee, let's ask--
-- if someone else comes in my place and sees my data sheets and my responses to customer questions, will she appreciate me or be shocked to see my mistakes?
-- How would the other person do this job better? What new systems and processes would they introduce??
And then apply it!
