HR Tomorrow: Embracing Transformation with Sally-Anne Dudley, HR Director, Veolia.
Continuing our HR Tomorrow series, Christine Carey , our director at evolve , is thrilled to engage in an eye-opening conversation with Sally-Anne Dudley , the HR Director at Veolia for UK, Ireland, and Finland.
Sally-Anne's journey into the world of HR began unexpectedly, starting as a Commercial Trainee at British Aerospace. A diverse career spanning numerous organisations has helped shape her vision and passion for HR, leading her to a profound commitment to complex areas like ecological transformation and net zero.
Diving into her professional insights, Sally-Anne identifies the biggest challenge facing HR today as globalisation, which demands a delicate balance between thinking globally and acting locally. Speaking of this challenge, she states,
"We must be agile enough to adapt to global trends while still recognizing the unique needs of local communities and employees."
She also speaks to attracting and retaining top talent in a competitive market, adapting to rapid changes both internally and externally including digital transformation, maintaining a 'human' touch in the workplace amidst technological advancements, and managing an unprecedented five generations in the workplace.
Reflecting on how her role has changed over the past five years, Sally-Anne emphasises the evolution from a reactive approach to a more proactive, strategic one. With advancements in technology, the rise of AI, and the influence of COVID, HR has shifted into a continuous transformation agent, contributing more than ever to an organisation's overall performance.
Technology brings opportunities and challenges to the HR landscape. From aligning technology with business strategies to ensuring a positive user experience and overcoming legal pitfalls, the whirlwind of technological innovation has dramatically reshaped HR. However, Sally-Anne wisely reminds us that the human element remains irreplaceable:
"At the heart of Human Resources are humans, which are just too complex for machines to analyse and react to appropriately."
Discussing diversity and inclusion, Sally-Anne advocates for organisational reflection of the communities they serve. While recognizing the progress made, she also acknowledges the long journey ahead, expressing scepticism about the effectiveness of unconscious bias training, adding
"True change requires more than training; it requires a cultural shift at every level."
Her HR strategy for attracting and retaining top talent emphasises a powerful combination of culture, environment, and purpose. As she eloquently states,
"Purpose can be more powerful than pay."
Sally-Anne measures her daily performance through safety, communication, living purpose and values, solving complex problems, and having a positive impact on those around her.
Her top tips for anyone in an HR role today include having a clear vision of one's career, embracing technology, and understanding numbers.
Sally-Anne Dudley ’s insights provide us with a multifaceted view into the transformative nature of HR, its complexities, and its critical role in shaping the future of organisations. Her passion and experience offer valuable lessons for current and aspiring HR professionals.
As we continue to explore the ever-changing HR landscape in our HR Tomorrow series, we are consistently inspired by the insights and wisdom of industry leaders.
