HR Means Hear It Right, Head it Right and Have It Right

Over the past 10 years we have seen a career of HR professionals evolved and diverse itself in many different roles and paths such as HRBP, HR digital, HR Innovation, etc. Definitely the evolution shows that HR plays significant role in organization in particular in the world’s today where massive waves of data and information bombarding all of us. Many times we have to stop, to search, to analyze, to crystalize and to conclude our own understanding and make decision. HR has never been more important than before. However one thing that has not been changed and will not be changed is HR must act as a tower of integrity of organization.

Being integrity is a job of everyone in organization, of course, not only HR. It is undeniable that policies, regulations processes and standards related to expected behaviors and actions of employees majorly coming from HR. Why is that? Because HR is in charge of “people.” It is a duty of HR to write and articulate those clearly and to realistically deliver implementation.

In my experience in writing and implementing various policies, people who have been affected by the policies must have a clear idea what will happen to them, what can be done, what cannot be done or even what are in/out of the scope. It is basic rights for all employees to understand, accept and act. I’m not in agreement that HR write policies and others with a room for different interpretation although we have seen many of those written and implement based on “where the benefits laid in.”

This is NOT limited to policy, process or standards but any initiatives and/or activities coming from HR.

It is crucial that HR needs to listen and to hear feedbacks and comments from employees who have impact from the implementation and bring those points to analyze, to improve and later to communicate to affected people. HR must also be clear on what/how they are going to implement. So they can communicate “right” and lead the implementation “right.” This also includes helping management at all levels and stakeholders to walk through the journey successfully together.

All these things are not magically taken place but they come from good planning, good risk management, and good communication. HR needs to ensure no one will be left behind and to be able to tell right from wrong.

My late boss who has passed away a few year ago once told me in one of many good conversations we had, “HR has to be White-As-White because you need to make people trust you. You walk to the talk.” That is a statement that I keep it as my life principle as HR.

And if I’m being asked the meaning of HR, I could immediately and proudly tell that HR means Hear It Right, Head It Right and Have It Right because we are a true partner of employees and organization.
