HPMA Awards 2023 - Winners!
James Devine FCIPD
#1 Most Influential HR Practitioner UK 2024 - Director KPMG & UK Head of healthcare workforce - Previous NHS Chief Executive, Deputy CEO & Chief People Officer - HPMA HR Director of the year 2019
Just over a week has flown by since the HPMA Healthcare People Management Association awards - (you know now it’s only 88 days until Christmas!)
Another great conference, and awards evening, with colleagues across health & care rightly very proudly showcasing great examples of innovative, compassionate and driven initiatives to improve the lives of our staff, and patients.
?We exhibited, and sponsored one of the work streams this year, which gave us a great opportunity to be joined by the fantastic trio of Raffaela Goodby FCIPD , Anthony Jones and Estelle Morrison - all sharing their honest views on strategic workforce planning, and importantly how they use the KPMG workforce planning solution in their respective organisations, and some of the barriers they have had to overcome.
We had a very sought after gift at the conference- a tea spoon! Yes, we understand the NHS, and that includes understanding the many times you will have had to stir your tea or coffee with any utensil or object, other than a tea spoon! - they seem to go missing don't they, so we wanted to give away something that would be purposeful. We actually pride ourselves on understanding the NHS, and particularly workforce. We have a great team of CIPD qualified individuals, including those with strong learning, HR, leadership, OD and resourcing backgrounds.
The awards evening was as grand as ever, and we were delighted that our work with the Northern Care Alliance was shortlisted, and won on the night! This was in the Bevan Brittan award for digital & workforce analytics. A real moment for the NCA to win the award, and recognition for us that the solution that we co-developed with the NHS, is award worthy across healthcare.

The solution is now live across 33 sites in the NHS, with more to follow. This includes all parts of health & care, meaning that it truly is a strategic workforce planning solution for the system; and one that does exactly what the Joint Forward Plan, and the Long Term Workforce Plan requires - aligns workforce, finance and activity, to produce workforce projections over the next ten years - we also have a new approach to our commercial offer, meaning that you can pay monthly; therefore reducing the costs, but still with the brilliant benefits we provide as part of the hosted solution.
Incidentally, we asked at the conference, Are you confident that your current approach to workforce planning enables you to project the workforce requirements over the next 10 years? 92% said no.
Part of the reason I came to KPMG was to do purposeful work, with like-minded people - all with the aim of improving the experience for staff in health & care, and patients. Winning this award with the NCA is fantastic recognition for teams at the NCA and KPMG - and shows that with partnership, purpose and trust, we can achieve great things together.
To hear more about the solution, do get in touch with the team Michael Allen Fayaz Tirmizi Nate Price-Whittle FCIPD James McKee Karena Starkie-Gomez - we can arrange a demo, and/or discuss how it can work in your system or organisation.
The time really is now.
