HP LaserJet Enterprise P3015; MP Tray 1 Pickup Roller Continuous Rotation

HP LaserJet Enterprise P3015; MP Tray 1 Pickup Roller Continuous Rotation

I was on a break fix call recently and encountered an issue on an HP LaserJet Enterprise P3015. The printer was continuously rotating the MP Tray 1 Pickup Roller and the cam lifter mechanism that lifts the paper up to the roller (MP Lifter Plate Assembly) during the "warm up rotation". This continuous rotation was, of course, an annoyance to the end user. Though the printer didn't error out, it was still unusable.

I've spent countless hours on this model printer, replacing fusers, fuser drive gears, paper input units and laser scanners. Most of the P3015's I end up performing break fix on are under an MPS program or service agreement. Servicing them rather than replacing them is economically feasible to most of my contract clients.

After a brief diagnosis, I suspected that the Tray 1 solenoid (RK2-1490) arm must have become dislodged somehow. I've experienced that issue a few times. In most cases, the arm becomes dislodged when the user pulls the paper in reverse from the Tray 1 assembly during a jam. The above picture shows the solenoid removed from it's housing. If you'll notice, the spring hasn't any tension on it and is barely lifting the arm.

The solenoid on the right is the new solenoid. As you will notice, the arm is extended completely by the spring tension. In order to replace this solenoid, quite a few of the sub assemblies will need to be removed in order to access it. The picture below will show the P3015 almost completely disassembled. Plan on an hour plus for this repair. Take pictuires if you've never performed this procedure, it will help in the reassembly process. I usually have a larger area than this to work with so I organize the sub assemblies in an order that makes in easier for reassembly.

This procedure and many more related to the common "faults" of the P3015 are covered in our break fix modules. If you require training on any of the HP LaserJet, Color LaserJet or Lexmark laser printers, give us a call. We can customize a model that best suits you.  Our modules include service manuals, theory guides, lab guides, technical documents, certifications and tech support. Contact us at 888-331-0711 for more information. Email: [email protected]

I repad the solenoids myself. I went to a fabric store and bought some felt material with adhesive backing. Cut small pieces and repad the solenoid arm or frames. Also on the hp 4200,4250, 4300,4350 and many others the adhesive of the old pad works through and causes the arm to stick even just a micro second, then jam. The cheapest fix in my tool bag next to the hot glue gun.

The foam pad breaks down and the adhesive for that foam holds the arm. They make them different now. Felt instead of foam.

Tray 2 was working fine Mohammad, so no need to change that one. I have changed them before though, but only when I found it necessary to do so.

We've recently run into this issue on our remanufactured printers and was able to resolve it with this same method.
