How’s Your Balance?

How’s Your Balance?

There’s one thing we all need to be mindful of as we start to get older and shift into different age categories, and that is one of balance.

You can argue that it’s important at any age.

But it’s not something we just need to focus on when you wake up one day and your in your 60’s and realise that it’s something you should’ve done ages ago.

You’re probably no doubt aware that you’re more prone to hip fractures (women especially) the older you get.

And 80% of the hospitalisations for this are people over 65 according to the?American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons .

I know of someone who had one last year and needed a hip replacement and it doesn’t sound like something you’d want to go through.

That’s where the importance of balance comes in.

And resistance training – even if it’s just using your own bodyweight.

It’s also one of the reasons why you may notice that we often do a bit of single leg exercises in a DPM session.

Yes it helps build strength, but it also subconsciously makes you work on your balance – even if you are holding on a little bit.

Cause really most of us aren’t going to be competing in any serious sport anymore, but if we’re in competition against an ageing body, you might as well get as many runs on the board now as you can to hopefully increase your overall healthspan.

The other challenge you can do with your workouts if you workout at home is to do so barefoot.

That’ll make your foot work harder as you don’t have the stability of a shoe to keep you balanced easier.

This little exercise is an oldie that we sometimes do at DPM that will help with your balance.

I’ve included the video below.

Cheers,

Daniel
