How’s That Going for You?

“I am an old guy, you know, I am kinda set in my ways”

?

This is the refrain I get from so many of my patients when I talk about changing some part of their diet/lifestyle/habits. And I get it. As a man in my mid 30’s (still hanging on until I have to say late 30’s!) who is confused and angered by most new music and media, I understand not wanting to make changes to what has worked. I am basically becoming Homer Simpson:

?

There is less time in my life, less time I have to live, and I don’t want to go around seeing if the newest fusion restaurant is really worth the hype, or if the latest mumble rap song is understandable enough to enjoy. I like what I like.

?

The thing is, these are fairly inconsequential habits and preferences that work for me. But what about those “ways” that you are set in that lead you astray?

?

A beer (or several) after dinner each night?

?

A constant nose in your phone to check your fantasy football team?

?

The sleeve of cookies you get into after your kids get to bed?

?

If your ways are leading you to be overweight, checked out, and living a dull, not-so-present life, then maybe it’s time to change your ways. Because most of my patients I talk to are coming to me because they have some sort of health problem(s). Their ways are killing them. And to remain set in those ways are likely leading to a painful existence and an early grave.

?

Now, I get it. Changing any sort of habit or way is hard. But if you are starting with the premise that “I am set in my ways,” any sort of deviation is going to be that much more difficult to achieve. Also, if your ways are leading to health, wealth, and prosperity, keep those ways up! But the lazy cop out answer to any painful reality of your habits harming you is “I am set in my ways.”

?

So, I do a habit audit. Ask yourself “How’s this going for me?” when it comes to any sort of ritual or habit you have fallen into. If it serving you, great! If not?

?

Then it’s time for a change.

?

And it’s going to be hard. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find a guide. Someone who has gone in your shoes before. A professional. Anyone who can help you change your course.

?

As long as that course doesn’t lead to the newest fusion restaurant where they are pumping in unintelligible rap music. Veer as far away from that as you can.

Truth! Being set in your ways as we age makes the mind and the body weak. Try new things and explore new opportunities; new activities keep us feeling younger. And if you feel younger, it might lead to better decision-making when it comes to your health.
