Howden's Early Careers Programme: Building the future of insurance

In October 2022, we launched our Early Careers Programme with a desire to support the development of emerging talent into the insurance industry. With success stories aplenty, many of our senior leaders joined straight out of education and have thrived. We have supported, guided, and mentored them into their current roles, and they now have the desire to give something back.

Our programme was designed to support those starting their career journey, new to the workforce, and seeking a role that would provide on-the-job training, whilst studying for professional qualifications. The first cohort joined us and immediately made an amazing impact on our teams. They eagerly set about learning how to support our clients, deepening their technical knowledge, and being a reliable assistant to their teams.

Emboldened by its success, a further three cohorts quickly followed, and we now have 50 early career talents on our programme. Seeing first-hand the success of the programme is a driver in wanting to build it to greater levels.

Our leadership team is integral to the success of the programme. They are fully supportive and actively seek out each cohort to mentor and guide on their journey. Four cohorts in 12 months would not be possible without the engagement of our leaders.? They take the time to meet the cohorts during their first few weeks, often taking them out to dinner and getting to know them on a deeper level. Insurance is a social industry, meeting up and networking is a large part of what we do. Many of our cohorts have had opportunities to attend industry events, workshops, and even evening soirees!

As the final cohort of 2023 commences their early career programme, they join a successful group of emerging talent that we are incredibly proud of.

Next up, building on the success in 2024. More cohorts, more careers started, more knowledge sharing, and more fun, much more fun.
