How YouTube Can Help Your SEO

How YouTube Can Help Your SEO

Many companies spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on their search engine marketing each year as well as invest heavily into their search engine optimization so that they can be organically found by potential customers. But Google isn't the only place that people are going nowadays to find what they are looking for. More and more, they are taking to social platforms like Pinterest and YouTube to get their answers.

Though the majority of brands still see YouTube as an online version of television where they can play their ads, the way that people use YouTube is like an ever-growing resource of information.

Sure, many of the biggest channels are subscribed to by the younger generations who want to follow their favourite new personalities, but more and more people of all ages are taking to YouTube to find out how to fix something or for real information to help their buying decisions: everything from the latest tech gadgets to beauty products to cars to microphones. The highly visual and interactive medium of video helps a potential buyer get a better simulation of what will work for their needs when researching.

Earlier this year, I made a terrible video (it's long, poorly lit, a bit unprepared) that showed people how to install Bouclair Home's self-pasted wallpaper. It was a total experiment, but the video has received over 23,000 views and continues to grow. Why? Because people are searching for how to install wallpaper. I had multiple people send me messages asking about Bouclair, so I'm certain they made a few extra sales. A quick look at the Bouclair YouTube channel reveals that they don't have anything like this...only really ads (even when disguised as a DIY).

In this week's video, I talk about the benefits of YouTube for your SEO - and throw in a few examples:

Of course, going back to last week's video, it's important to know your audience and what they will be searching for in order to plan this content better, but overall, it's important to consider YouTube (and, of course, Pinterest - but that will be another lesson) in your SEO strategy.

While a bit late in the game (I hadn;t yet thought of all of the angles), I successfully used YouTube, Pinterest, Facebook and a flipbook-style site to augment my quasi-Internet savvy Realtor's basic listing (that was scraped and reposted by the Trulias of the world). Today I wouldn't consider any real estate listing to be complete without such a combination of crosslinks to enhance its positioning. (BTW, if you're selling a home, don't assume your agent is actively monitoring all of the usual scraping sites. And besides a texting link, print and post a QR code on your signage.)

I run a food blog and have done so for years. I went into video purely for SEO. The videos do well, but it serves a couple of purposes. One, it demonstrates the recipe to my current viewers, but I also servers as marketing to a new audience. They are your best commercials ever.
