How You’re Screwing Up Your Job Search Without Even Realizing It

How You’re Screwing Up Your Job Search Without Even Realizing It

If your job search is slower than you want, there's a good chance you're screwing something (or many things) up.

That's because the advice most career resources provide causes you to screw up your search, especially when you have difficult problems in a competitive job market (like 2023).

So, if you have challenges like unemployment, age 40/50/60+, trying to change career/industry/location, searching for a remote job or raise/promotion, finding a job quickly, have a long term search, long term gaps, family leave, "bouncy resume", or your industry is in decline, there are different strategies to help you overcome these job search issues - the basic advice given by most resources won't cut it.

But to stop screwing up your job search, you first need to realize how you're messing it up.

Ask yourself, how many of these job search worst practices are you using in your search?

  • Sending resumes that aren't customized for the individual hiring manager's current needs (they aren't on the job description)
  • Investing little time customizing each resume (15-20 minutes per resume)
  • "Playing the numbers" to try and get lucky by sending a high volume of resumes
  • Creating a first impression that lists a lot of "stuff"
  • Focusing your resume (and interview) on responsibilities/experience/qualifications/tasks
  • Sending cover letters
  • Trying to get an edge using JobScan
  • Relying on internal or external recruiters to get you to hiring managers
  • Networking too late
  • Applying to jobs online

Any one of these worst practices can screw up your job search, making it too slow. Most job seekers use 50-100% of these worst practices in their search, because it's what they were taught.

You might be fooled into thinking your search is progressing, but these worst practices cause you to get the lowest quality of interviews that an employer offers, with the worst chances of landing a job.

And if you're being honest with yourself, you're using 50-100% of these worst practices too.

Good thing there are more effective ways ... why not learn the best practices, so you can drop the worst practices that slow your search?
