How Was Your Summer?

How Was Your Summer?

Next week this will be the question everyone asks.

This default question comes post Labor Day every year, regardless of age or life stage.

Because small talk and rapport building can turn into smart banter and bigger (networking, email and interview) career and life opportunities...

How you reply doesn't have to be perfunctory, with minimal effort applied.

Here are a few suggestions;

The Epic Adventure Approach: "My summer was a thrilling ride through new experiences. From hiking, to exploring hidden beaches, and national parks, I've collected memories to last a lifetime."

Sweaty mess and loving every second. More year-round hiking is one of the main reasons we left Chicago. Lots of rocks, streams and bug bites speak summer.

The Cultural Immersion: "I immersed myself in different cultures this summer. From trying exotic cuisines to attending local festivals, I gained a profound appreciation for the world's diversity."

Salvage Station brings outdoor music to the next level. Mavis Staples, Ziggy Marley & Trombone Shorty in one night. Who knew that men who wear skirts are a real and cool trend often accompanied by a man bun.

The Learning Journey: "My summer was a quest for knowledge. I dived into new books, documentaries, and expanded my capacity for patience. It was an intellectually invigorating season!"

Moving is hard. Really hard. It tested my patience and disruption on new and unimaginable levels. Two moves in five weeks, living out of boxes, running the business and showing up for clients was challenging.

The Reconnection Chronicle: "This summer, I rekindled connections with family and friends. Picnics, barbecues, and heartfelt conversations made it a season of deepening bonds."

Hands down, being with friends and family was the highlight of this summer. This night (Dance 100) dancing for 100 minute straight made connecting and reconnecting life and heart sustaining.

The Creative Odyssey: "My summer was a canvas for creativity. I delved into writing, wildflower picking and tried my hand at mexican cooking. It was a season of self-expression and discovery."

"The Never Ending Flower Garden" is perfectly named. For $25 you can fill a container and pick all the flowers you want. Zinnias, Dahlia's and other treasures in season. Open 7 days a week, June-September. I'll be back!!

How will you answer this question?

Ok. First of all, your summer was inspirational. I adore summer - so I try to eke out all the fun and all the joy that I can. My tennis game improved dramatically, despite being sidelined with a calf tweak. I was able to speak on one of my biggest stages to date! I connected with friends who I hadn’t seen in a minute - which is the best. I soaked in my city that I love and adore. I ate lots of good food. Went to some fun BBQ’s with new friends! All and all , a really good summer!

Your summer was eventful! For those who have been on the job search, they may feel like it’s all doom and respond in rather depressing ways. For me I could say… My summer included going into labor 2 weeks early, leaving the hospital unable to walk from nerve damage, and then daily doctors appointments to try to reduce my excruciating pain. Missed out on a ton of business opportunities because of it and to the majority of my older sons activities due to lack of mobility accessibility. Or I could say… I completed my family of creation with my red headed mini me Mav. Listened to some amazing audio books and podcasts, check out this new podcast called Wiser Than Me. I learned to walk again after experiencing nerve damage and can’t wait to be able to run again. My favorite work project was designing a new workshop to help people navigate this crazy job search market and AI craze. So often, when you’re struggling, you don’t realize how negative and off putting you can sound when chatting with others. When possible, try to remember the good too.
