How Your Professional Dresscode Impacts Your Life

“Your appearance is often the first thing others notice about you. Dressing professionally can help form a positive impression to people you meet in the workplace. This is especially important for interviews and when meeting upper-level managers who make hiring and promotion decisions.” -Indeed?
Within a recent interaction, the other person made mention of how I was always dressed nicely and with a tie. The person wasn’t attempting to downgrade the importance of dressing neatly, but with the intention of an inquisitive manner. I moved towards explaining to the gentleman that I see it as a uniform. When I am in a suit and tie, I am in uniform and ready to work and serve. This line of thinking placed me into a thought-provoked inquiry as to why this is important and the role for which clothes play in professional life and individual psychology.?
According to Brain Fodder,
“The psychology of clothing is complex and taps into culture, symbolism, neuroscience, and many more aspects of the human experience. Fashion and clothing influences behavior in multiple ways; our perception of ourselves, how others react to us, our confidence and self-esteem.”
Therefore, It's no secret that first impressions matter, and what you wear to work can make a subconscious and visual impact during that initial encounter. Dressing appropriately can also impact how you feel and how you feel will impact how you perform at work and additionally impact your overall fulfillment surrounding the work you do.?
The way you dress for work can communicate a great deal about your mindset and approach to your job. For example, if you show up in casual clothes, it may give the impression that you do not take your work seriously or that you are not committed to the job. Even though this may not be true for you, the appearance you display can silently communicate this. Conversely, dressing in a more professional manner can convey a sense of confidence, expertise, and attention to detail.
In today's world of remote work, some may argue that dressing up for work is no longer necessary. However, even in virtual meetings, it is still important (maybe even more so) to maintain a professional appearance. You want to ensure that you are presenting yourself in the best possible way, whether you are at home or in the office. Additionally, when you present yourself professionally at home during a virtual meeting, you show to others in the meeting that your commitment to professionalism doesn’t change just because you are at home.?

As mentioned in the beginning, the way you dress can also impact your productivity and focus because what you wear tends to trigger a specific mindset - as if placing on a uniform. Studies have shown that wearing formal clothing can enhance abstract thinking and increase the ability to process information. There is also immense professional and psychological benefit in being consistent in action, and dressing professionally every day will become a habit for which you think less and less as the action becomes automatic.?
It's worth noting that understanding your uniform will stem from understanding where you work. I would never advise a construction company to adopt a suit-and-tie policy. Just as I wouldn’t advise a Fortune 500 company to have “dirty boots day” at the office. As aforementioned, neither is better or worse. Rather, the uniform must match the ultimate task being sought to be completed and thereafter implemented consistently. However, to the construction worker: Maybe adopt a personal policy that your boots start clean every day. Or, your gloves are washed and cleaned each night for work the next morning. For the corporate employee: Maybe adopt a personal policy of only wearing white shirts with rotating colors. Or, having your suits prepped and hung with Monday through Friday labels on the hangers.
Your attire can communicate a great deal about your mindset, level of professionalism, and commitment to the work. Therefore, it is essential to dress appropriately for your workplace and to take the time to consider how your attire may be perceived by others, and how what you wear impacts the way you think throughout the day.?
Remember, how you present yourself can set the tone for a successful day and a more fulfilling life.
