As I sat on a bench at an elevated point in a park, the cityscape unfolded before me, bathed in the golden hues of a summer sunset. From this vantage point, I could see the intricate tapestry of the city from various angles, each offering a unique perspective. The sprawling urban landscape, with its diverse neighborhoods and bustling streets, reminded me of how our views on life are shaped by our perspectives, positions, and exposures. It was a moment of profound reflection, realizing how these elements ultimately determine the choices we make and influence our decisions.
Perspectives: The Lens Through Which We See the World
Our perspectives are like lenses that color our view of the world. They are shaped by our backgrounds, cultures, experiences, and the narratives we embrace. Just as my elevated bench allowed me to see the city from a broader angle, expanding our perspectives can open our minds to new possibilities. When we step out of our usual environments and engage with diverse viewpoints, we gain a richer understanding of the world and our place within it.
Positions: Where We Stand Influences What We See
The position we occupy—whether physical, social, or professional—plays a significant role in shaping our worldview. From the park bench, I could see both the beauty and complexity of the city below. Similarly, our positions in life influence our perceptions and priorities. A person in a leadership role may see opportunities where others see challenges, while someone from a marginalized community might perceive obstacles that others overlook. Recognizing the impact of our positions helps us understand the biases and limitations in our views.
Exposure: The Experiences That Broaden Our Horizons
Exposure to different environments, cultures, and ideas broadens our horizons and deepens our understanding. Traveling, reading, engaging in meaningful conversations, and embracing new experiences are ways to expand our exposure. My experience of the sunset view in Milwaukee was enriched by the knowledge and memories of other cities and landscapes I have encountered. The more we expose ourselves to diverse experiences, the more equipped we are to make informed and empathetic decisions.

Choices: The Intersection of Perspectives, Positions, and Exposure
The choices we make are a direct reflection of our perspectives, positions, and exposure. They are the tangible outcomes of our inner landscapes. When we appreciate the diversity of viewpoints and understand the influence of our positions, we can make more thoughtful and inclusive decisions. In my moment of reflection on that park bench, I realized that every choice we make is an opportunity to bridge gaps, build connections, and foster understanding.
Decisions: Shaping Our Path Forward
Our decisions are the steps we take on our life journey, guided by our choices. Each decision we make contributes to the path we carve out for ourselves and impacts those around us. By consciously expanding our perspectives, critically examining our positions, and seeking new exposures, we can navigate our lives with greater wisdom and purpose. The panoramic view of Milwaukee at sunset served as a metaphor for the wide scope of possibilities that open up when we embrace a broader vision.
Embracing a Higher View
As I descended from the bench and left the park, I carried with me a renewed sense of clarity and purpose. The experience reminded me of the importance of continuously seeking higher views—both literally and metaphorically. By cultivating a mindset that values diverse perspectives, acknowledges the influence of our positions, and embraces new exposures, we can make choices and decisions that lead to a more fulfilling and interconnected life.
Let us all strive to elevate our views, broaden our horizons, and approach life with an open heart and mind. In doing so, we not only enrich our own lives but also contribute to a more inclusive and understanding world.
