How Your Communication Style Affects Your Sales Performance

How Your Communication Style Affects Your Sales Performance

In our diverse and interconnected world, one undeniable truth stands out: we are all unique in how we communicate. Whether it is our spoken words, our gestures, or the unspoken messages hidden within our expressions, communication is a complex dance that we all engage in.

Yet all too often, our attempts to convey thoughts and ideas become entangled in misunderstandings. There is a mismatch between our words, our actions, and our intentions.

Your Communication Style and Performance

We've all interacted with individuals who have unique communication styles. All of us have interacted with individuals who have unique communication styles. Recognizing and adapting to these styles is essential for becoming a more successful communicator.

Success in sales starts long before your sales team engages with a potential client. It hinges on how your team interacts and strategizes, making all the difference in closing deals and fostering client relationships.

What are the Four Key Communication Styles to pay attention to?

Let's explore four distinct communication styles, each with its own strengths and potential pitfalls:

1. The Analyzer (Data-Driven Thinker): This person is methodical and seeks answers to every question. They thrive on precision and logic. To connect with them, engage their neo-cortex, the rational part of the brain. Provide well-structured, data-backed information to support your points.

2. The Values Person (Control Enthusiast): They crave control, directness, and putting business first. Help them feel like it's their idea. Understanding their values and needs will make them more receptive to your message.

3. The Social Energizer (Extrovert): These individuals are outgoing and need to feel important. To win them over, make them feel like the star of the show. Appeal to the heart of their mind, and let them shine in social settings.

4. The Conscious Builder (Passive Obliger): They are passive, indecisive, and tend to say yes to everything, often overloading themselves. When interacting with them, be patient and consider involving others in decision-making to ensure clarity and commitment.

Tailoring Communication for Success

Understanding these communication styles, both within your team and when engaging with clients, can be a game-changer. It allows you to adapt your approach to effectively communicate and build stronger connections, ultimately leading to better business and more satisfied clients.

Remember, effective communication is an ongoing journey. It's about fine-tuning your skills, adapting to the needs of others, and continuously seeking ways to break through communication barriers.

By understanding the different communication styles and adjusting your own style accordingly, you can improve your sales performance and close more deals.

Here are some additional tips for communicating effectively with customers:

  • Be clear and concise.
  • Use active listening skills.
  • Ask open-ended questions.
  • Be respectful and empathetic.
  • Tailor your message to the customer's needs.

Such a good take on being more effective as a communicator. The more we understand our natural style and the impact it has along with picking up the ability to flex it, the more effective we become

It is a good idea to create your own communication style, but make sure doing this won't alienate potential clients because they can't cope or it grates on them. Some people will say those who don't like your communication style aren't your idea clients, but really there is a need to tame it down a bit if it is OTT, or boost it in other areas to make it match better with your preferred people you'd like to work with. In other words, preserve your personality but at the same time adapt it to suit others.

Interesting article Jason, I see confusion in businesses all the time where the reception desk is saying something different to the sales team is saying something different than the CEO. It all filters down.
