If you've ever felt like a fraud despite your accomplishments, you're not alone. Imposter syndrome affects many professionals, often creeping in when you least expect it. But what if the very person meant to guide you—your coach—might be unknowingly contributing to these feelings?
From time to time, I encounter women who are nothing short of amazing—accomplished, driven, and passionate. Yet, there's a noticeable lack of enthusiasm in their business, a dimming of the spark that once fueled their success. These women aren't struggling because of a lack of talent or effort. They're caught in the subtle yet powerful grip of imposter syndrome, often without realizing it.
Receiving feedback like "You aren't ready," "You can't charge that," or "You shouldn't speak, write a book, or start a new project..." can be incredibly disheartening, especially when it comes from someone you trust to guide your growth. These kinds of statements can seed doubt, erode your confidence, and make you question your own capabilities.
When you find yourself shrinking back or second-guessing your goals because of someone else's feedback, it's a sign that something deeper might be preventing business success. What if the challenges you're facing in your business are much closer than you think? Could it be that your coach, whom you trust to elevate your game, inadvertently makes you question your worth and capabilities? It's a tricky question to ask, but an essential one.
Here are 5 Signs it's time to Question Your Coach/Mentor Partnership
This subtle knock against your excellence can sound like they are pushing you towards new heights, but they are throwing you into the comparison trap. It can make you feel like you're never measuring up, leading to self-doubt and insecurity.
2. Focus on Weaknesses Over Strengths
Spending more time pointing out your weaknesses than acknowledging your strengths and accomplishments is a tell-tale sign that your awesomeness is making them uncomfortable. If you feel minimized after a conversation with your coach, then it might be them projecting their limitations on you.
3. Unclear or Conflicting Feedback
If you've ever left a session scratching your head about the next steps it's a clear sign that the feedback you've been provided is vague or inconsistent.
4. Pressure to Conform to a Certain Mold
Have you interacted with a coach/mentor who is only great at their model? If so, your business could veer into a path not meant for you. If you feel pushed to do something that doesn't align with your authentic self it's time to reassess this partnership.
5. Lack of Recognition for Progress
Never should a coach ever tell you that you aren't smart enough, skilled enough, or talented enough to do something. If they can't see your greatness, they must get off the boat.
The Power of Clarity: The Cure for Imposter Syndrome
The good news is that clarity can be the antidote to imposter syndrome and poor coaching. When you're clear, it becomes much easier to filter constructive feedback from your coach without internalizing it as a personal failing. Here are the three types of clarity you need to regain your confidence and push past imposter syndrome:
Understanding your strengths and areas of expertise is essential. When you're clear on what you're good at, you can approach challenges with confidence and view feedback as an opportunity for growth rather than a confirmation of inadequacy.
2. Clarity of Desire
Knowing what you truly want in your business and setting a clear vision helps you stay focused on your goals and vigilant about who you allow on your journey. Clarity of desire prevents you from being swayed by external pressures or opinions, allowing you to passionately pursue your ambitions.
3. Clarity of Self
This is the foundation of overcoming imposter syndrome. Clarity of self means understanding who you are at your core—your values, your identity, and your worth. When you have this clarity, you can navigate putting your skill set to work with your desires as the guide to the future you want.
Is it time for a reset?
Imposter syndrome can make even the most capable professionals feel like they're constantly on shaky ground. If you find yourself doubting your abilities, questioning your decisions, or feeling like you're not enough, it might be time for a reset. A reset of your mindset, approach, and, ultimately, foundation.
Resetting imposter syndrome starts with deep introspection and gaining clarity in the areas that matter most. It's about understanding your true strengths, realigning with your deepest desires, and most importantly, embracing a clear sense of self.
This is where Reset the Foundation comes in. It's not just a book—it's a blueprint for rediscovering and solidifying the core elements of who you are and what you stand for.
