How are you showing up as a leader in uncertain times?

I’ve been thinking a lot at the moment about leading through change. As we navigate through turbulent and uncertain times, it requires a different kind of leadership mindset.?

How are you showing up as a leader when you yourself have doubt or uncertainty? How are you balancing being vulnerable with inspiring confidence? How are you rising to the occasion when your team turns to you for direction?

From having had to navigate this in the past, more times than I’d like to remember, here are my thoughts.?

What else would you advise??

Overcommunicate. You just can’t communicate enough. When you think you’ve said something too much, force yourself to say it again. People not only need to hear the words, but really absorb that they matter deeply to you.?

Be as transparent as possible. In moments of tough news, our instinct can sometimes be to protect our people from the worst of the truth. In the absence of information, people connect the dots to assume a story that is even worse. Trust that the people you hired are intelligent humans and can rise up to face the truth.?

Lean into your values.? All those great values you touted when times were good don’t mean a thing if you abandon them when things get tough. They matter now more than ever.?

Be a “wartime” leader.? Now, more than ever, push yourself to be both cautious and yet decisive, swift yet also thoughtful, compassionate and yet strong-willed. The situation demands that you show up with the best version of you, every single day.?

Now’s the time to push aside your doubts and step into your confidence. To question all your past assumptions, and yet believe in yourself, to raise the bar and push others around you to do the same. Now’s the time to step up as a leader in uncertain times.?

"In the absence of information, people connect the dots to assume a story that is even worse" - Such a great point. I would also add that I always appreciate when a leader acknowledges the reality of a situation instead of avoiding it.
