How Are You Showing Up Against Your Competition?

My son’s baseball team played a doubleheader this weekend against a team that was a year older and had a better season record. Instead of going into it thinking they were going to get crushed (like I thought they would, honestly), the boys were excited to see how they could compete against the next level.

Before the game started, I heard some of the boys on the other team say things like, “This is going to be easy” and “These kids won’t hit the ball far, we won’t even need to move in the field.”

And they were partially right; our team didn’t hit any home runs (like the older team did). But what they did do was play like the scrappy underdogs.

They brought their A-game to every single play and at-bat to chip away at the score until they ultimately won the game. And then they did it again in the second game.

So today, how are you going into the game against the competition in your search for a senior leadership role or board seat?

  • Are you leaning on your years of experience and record, assuming it’s going to be easy?
  • Or are you pulling out all the stops and competing like it’s yours to lose?

For those of you who are pulling out all the stops and competing against a level-up, my friend Tim Beshears, SHRM-SCP , a tech recruitment leader at Fox Search Group , posted a message for you this week:

Be Bold! Call the Bluffs! Conquer the space!

Paper Tigers Everywhere - Go win the day without fear

And for those of you who aren’t worried about the competition for whatever reason, I have seen too many qualified candidates (even internal candidates who were told they were the choice) lose the offer because they didn’t come to the table ready to compete.

What does competing at this level look like?

If you’re looking to launch a serious search for an executive role or board seat, you need to have:

  • A stand-out resume and LinkedIn profile that both position you as a leader in your field
  • A comprehensive search strategy that does not rely on online applications
  • Sharpened interview skills and career narrative to highlight your achievements and fit for the role
  • A compensation negotiation strategy to maximize your final offer

All these pieces work together and build off one another to help you compete for and land top opportunities in your industry.

As a former recruiter, I have seen the underdog win the role over the experienced candidates because they wanted it more and were willing to do the work....just like your son's baseball team.

My main takeaway was how the less experienced team showed up and owned the game from the beginning, Debra Boggs. In the career field, as Gina Riley would say, executive/professional presence.
