How you Show Up is the Art of Service

How you Show Up is the Art of Service

I’m a big believer in showing up in every moment as if I was meant to be there.

But when type 1 diabetes suddenly descended on my son and, therefore, my family, I was more terrified than confident about what was expected of me in that moment.

So, I showed up the best way I could, as a mom determined to love my child through this.

When we helped Austin form his first JDRF walk team, I showed up as a cheerleader and made sure my son took note that he was not alone.

When we attended the JDRF Gala, I showed up as a supporter, ready to raise funds for a cause I had no choice but to believe in.

When I attended my first JDRF Research Update, I showed up as a curious learner, hungry to absorb every bit of information and every ounce of hope.

And, when I was asked to join the JDRF NJ Metro & Rockland County Board, I showed up incredibly humbled, but as an enlisted agent reporting for an important mission.

As the chapter board president for the last two years, I often wondered whether I did enough, inspired enough, or expressed my gratitude often enough to the wonderful staff, volunteers, donors, and amazing board colleagues.

This weekend, as we safely gathered outside for our board retreat with my extraordinary successor Dave Goodes, our new executive director Taran Connelly, and our former executive director now national leaders Jess Backofen, my JDRF family acknowledged my service in a most thoughtful and beautiful way: with a vibrant piece of word art created by talented Toni Field of It’s About Art. The words capture how others thought I showed up to lead the chapter and our mission.

How awesome to think of service as a work of art — unique and one-of-a-kind!

I plan to continue to show up for my son, my extended JDRF family, and this important cause. Because doing something is always better than feeling helpless. And until there are cures, serving with hope in my heart is the best way I know how to show up.

I love this. Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. I often talk about art as a story. Given that stories are meant to be shared, so are our lives through service and connection to others. Your story being reflected in this piece of art is particularly special.
