How Will You Measure Your Life?

Recently I was going through an article titled "How to Manage Your Life" by  Clayton M. Christensen, published in the HBR as part of coursework - Managing Organizations.

Here's my key takeaways from the article -

"Do not over invest in work, and under invest in Relationships."

Modern work culture often champions and celebrates burn out, obsession about work, and that people should derive their self-esteem and self-worth from their job. Christensen disputes that culture, arguing that ultimately our greatest sources of joy in life will be our family and close friends, and for those relationships to enrich our lives, we need to devote time to them.

The relationships you have with family and close friends are going to be the most important sources of happiness in your life. But you must be careful. When it seems like everything at home is going well, you will be lulled into believing that you can put your investments in these relationships on the back burner. That would be an enormous mistake. By the time serious problems arise in those relationships, it often is too late to repair them."

The success of an organization can be traced back to the way it is managed. Whether you are talking of a small to medium-sized or a large establishment, management is so crucial to be overlooked. First, organizations set their goals. These goals must be planned beforehand, and it is up to a good management structure to come up with proposals and plans for how to achieve them.

In addition, management arranges the factors of production, assembles and organizes the resources, integrates the resources in effective manner to achieve goals. It directs group efforts towards achievement of pre-determined goals. By defining objective of organization clearly there would be no wastage of time, money and effort. Management converts disorganized resources of men, machines, money etc. into useful enterprise. These resources are coordinated, directed and controlled in such a manner that enterprise work towards attainment of goals. In every organization, management plays an important role for achieving the goals and objectives of the organization. That is why we say importance of management is necessary for every organization.

Management is the most noble of professions if it's practiced well. No other occupation offers as many ways to help others learn and grow, take responsibility and be recognized for achievement, and contribute to the success of a team.
