How Will You Know When You’re Successful?
We all define success differently, and because of that, we all need individual metrics to measure our progress. Are you successful now? Will you be successful in a year? 5 years? To start answering those questions, we need to define what success means to us; and with the personal definition in place, then we need to implement some systems to measure our short- and long-term progress. Goal setting is key. When we’re consistently busy, it’s easy to give all of our attention to the short term — getting through today or the next week — but we need to stay focused on the longer-term as well. We need a healthy balance that allows us to meet our daily demands while still taking steps toward our larger goals in the future.
?
With every goal we set, we need to develop some way to track the progress we’re making toward that goal. Setting daily or weekly reminders to chart progress can be a helpful way to stay motivated. I mentioned balance, and that’s what we need to establish — we can’t let our longer-term goals get pushed off our priority lists because we’re swamped with new emergencies every day. Tracking our progress keeps us accountable. It’s a helpful reminder that even if we can’t dedicate an hour each day to that goal (or those goals), it’s important that we get to it with whatever spare time becomes available. The frequent reminders will help us find the time.
?
Tracking our progress also lets us refine the goal along the way. Our definition of success is likely going to change with time, and that might alter the goal itself. When we’re on top of our goals and making consistent progress, it will be much easier to change the steps to reach our goals if the goals take a different shape.
