How are you feeling today? 5 questions to check- in with yourself (and how to solve those wonky moments).

How are you feeling today?

How are you feeling today? No, really?...seriously...?

Not just "fine," but really. How are you feeling physically and mentally? Are you feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious? Do you feel tired, bored, or restless?

It's easy to bypass your feelings and emotions...

  • When you think you need to get on with things.
  • When you don't want to let people down.
  • When you have obligations and responsibilities.

The thing is, when you don't take stock for a moment, for a day, for an hour, on your own mental wellbeing (and physical too) then you risk heading towards a burn out, adrenal fatigue, stress, loss of self and more.

First of all and very importantly, if you're not sure how you're feeling, or if you're feeling a little off, don't worry. It's normal to have ups and downs throughout the day.

But...

It's also important to take some time for yourself to check in with how you're feeling.

Here are 5 questions you can ask to check in with yourself (and what to do if you sense something is a little wonky):

1.How am I feeling physically?

Are you feeling tired, sore, or unwell? If so, what can you do to take care of yourself? Can you take a nap, drink some water, or eat something healthy?

A physical check-in is vital because it helps you to understand your body's needs. Maybe that 1 hour spin class, 5-mile walk and weight lifting session was a step too far?

I like variety in exercise anyway. Some days we go high and others we take it down a little.

2. How am I feeling mentally?

Are you feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or anxious? If so, what can you do to calm down? Can you take a few deep breaths, listen to some music, or read a book?

Usually, distancing yourself from a high stress environment can help you to see clearly and give your mind a rest. Don't ever think you have to put up and shut up either!

3. What is taking up most of my headspace right now?

Is it work? Family? Friends? Something else? If you're feeling overwhelmed, it can be helpful to identify what's causing you stress. Once you know what's stressing you out, you can start to come up with a plan to deal with it.

Make a list, then cross off the things that you can delegate to others.

Think about the things that are most important to you right now, and just do that.

Remember, the past is done, stay in the present and tomorrow hasn't happened yet.

4. What was my last full meal, and have I been drinking enough water?

Eating and drinking regularly can help to improve your mood and energy levels. If you're feeling tired or hangry, it's probably time to eat something.

(if you're fasting for Ramadan, then take a nap, make sure to eat and drink enough fluids at the start and end of your fast and eat nutritious foods, avoiding sugary, high fat and salty products).

5. How have I been sleeping?

Getting enough sleep is essential for your physical and mental health. If you're not getting enough sleep, you're more likely to feel stressed, irritable, and exhausted. 7 to 8 hours is important for all of us. Leave the phone alone, for an hour before going to bed. Do some journaling and read something uplifting before sleeping. AVOID news items of doom and gloom and focus your mind on positivity. Try out a mindful, guided meditation.

Final Word...

By taking some time to check in with yourself, you can identify any areas where you need to make some changes. And by making those changes, you can improve your overall well-being.

So next time you're feeling a little off, take some time for yourself to check in with how you're feeling. Ask yourself these 5 questions, and see how you can improve your day.
