HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING

HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING

For the longest time, I kept analyzing some of my habits which considered less desirable and always looked for a solution to help rectify some of my deficiencies.

It was not until I examined at the root cause which made me understand that my bigger issues stemmed from much smaller habits which were embedded in my DNA.

For instance, I found that I was a very untidy sort of person. My desk was often cluttered with a number of papers, stationary and useless paraphernalia which wad not required most of the time. I then looked at my car. The glove compartment was filled with junk that made it difficult to locate my licence and vehicle registration. When I went for meetings, I was a scatter brain with information that was dispersed in my laptop in various folders and drives which took me a life time to locate a required document or file.

I went for a number of workshops to help me organize myself. You are probably familiar with Stephen Covey's 7 Habits. I learnt how to plan my day, how to prioritize tasks and how to organize my life into compartments. As much as I would like to say that it truly worked. I was back to square one in a couple of weeks.

I was in a situation where I was actually convincing myself that I was not able to change.

A few years down the line, I did have the privilege of attending a workshop called 'Millionaire Mind Intensive' and a common theme presented at this conference was that 'HOW YOU DO ANYTHING IS HOW YOU DO EVERYTHING'.

At first this did not mean anything to me but as we dug deeper, I found myself asking questions like:

  • Do I make your bed every morning
  • Do I put my shoes away into the rack whenever I get home
  • Do I fold my clothes or do I just chuck the whole lot into my cupboard?
  • Do I put away the cutlery into its proper place?
  • Do I take good care of my stuff?
  • Do I respect my own property?

These are simple tasks/questions which I would have never even considered but it is amazing the role these habits play in your professional life.

You see - our behavior is based on our habits which were ingrained into our system at a young age. The only way to reset the thermostat would be to change our habits. Therefor it is important to start small and get the simple things right first. If this is achieved, then it more likely that this could cascade to other parts of our life.

After trying this out for a period of time, I have noticed that I much better organized person. This is purely because I have formed a stronger foundation which allows my mind to apply these behaviors in every other facet of my every day life.

--and this is not only restricted to this example. I noticed by having better relationships at home with my family, I am found it much easier to foster better relationships with my colleagues at work. This is because the principals are the same even though the environment is different.

If you cant stand in line at a super market or wont wait for the traffic light to turn green, chances are you will be impatient and unfair at the office.

If you cant hold your tongue or always want the last word to end a conversation, chances are you will always want to have your way, dispel other people's opinions and overall be unapproachable at work.

You you are an amazing humanitarian and are selfless towards others, chances are you will be humble and empathetic to your team members.

How you do the small things cascade to the big things!

In order to make any substantial change to your life, it is important to understand the root cause, and work on the simple things first.

At the end of the day, it is all about manipulating your habits to create the best version of yourself.

Your subconscious whether you like it or not is already programmed by your early experiences and if you are to make a change, you need to rewire your DNA.

This is virtually impossible if you are constantly trying to defeat a problem rather than seek the root cause for your pain and anguish.

In my case it was making my bed and putting my shoes away!
