How are you Coping?

How are you Coping?

We are living in an unprecedented time. It feels to me, like we have all been caught up in a surreal book plot like The Eyes of Darkness by Dean Koontz or the movie Outbreak starting Dustin Hoffman. We have all been asked to make changes to our work and personal lives to “flatten the curve” of the COVID-19 virus. Many of us may feel that the changes we’ve been asked to make are an overreaction to a “bad flu”.

I am not a healthcare professional so I can’t comment on the veracity of the directives we have been given but I can say that no matter how healthy I am and the likelihood that I would emerge unscathed from this pandemic I am going to do everything I can, be it social distancing, delaying travel or activities outside my home, in an effort to protect the more vulnerable people in my life.

My 95-year-old mother-in-law lives with my husband and me. My parents are 74 and 81. They each are healthier than most people of their ages, but I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I brought this virus into our home or my parents’ home and they became very ill or died. We are a very close family and we enjoy spending time together. We are also very socially active people, who like to have dinner with friends and go to wine tastings or chili cookoffs etc. We have cancelled two dinner parties for this month and switched our book club meeting to a virtual meeting.

We all have a strong work ethic of going to work sick, toughing it out and brushing off our symptoms. We also have demonstrated abilities to overcome obstacles. In this crisis, we must tough it out by staying home. We must fight this virus by hindering its ability to spread. This virus doesn’t want to kill us it wants us to live and spread the virus to others so it can live. Unfortunately, people who are elderly or have pre-existing medical conditions are at risk for severe illness or even death.

Medical professionals believe we will only be able to control the spread of the virus if we stay home. If we are selfish and ignore the directives, we will give the virus the opportunity to live and continue to spread and we will lose lives. My neighbors and I started making medical masks last week. We finished making ninety masks yesterday and donated forty six masks to two hospitals. We plan to donate five hundred masks by next weekend.

To me it is simple. Stay home and control the virus and maybe clean out a closet or paint the bathroom or spend the time with the kids working on a jig saw puzzle or playing cards I can binge watch the original Star Trek series I DVR’d, that I’ve been wanting to watch for months. As temping as it is, I will not go to the Tucker Brewing Company’s trivia night on Wednesday (They will probably be closed anyway).

In the end, months and years from now we will look back on this event in human history and share our stories just like we did with 911 and our predecessors did with the Spanish Flu pandemic and World War II. We can stop the spread of this virus if we take control. Just like everything else in life this event is what we are going to make of it. How are you coping?
