How are you celebrating your own courage?

It was Remembrance Day yesterday.
We honoured those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom today.
This included 2 of my uncles who were Killed in Action as well as the tragic loss of so many during my various deployments, especially Afghanistan.?
They led with an extraordinary level of courage when everything was at stake.?
Yet I guarantee from caring for so many injured who survived and the pilot that safely landed our plane when we were under mortar attack flying into Afghanistan……
That they never saw their extreme acts of courage as courage…..
‘It’s just what I did!’ is the common phrase I have heard so many times!
Despite every obstacle and emotion…..
They moved forward with grit and determination - the epitome of resilience
Knowing that their contribution to the military mission was bigger than them.
The day after Remembrance Day….
Is a chance for us, as leaders, to reflect on how we, too, can embrace this resilience and courage in our daily lives and leadership.
Courage isn’t about not feeling fear……
It’s about moving forward even when fear is right there beside us.?
Knowing we must get through the fear to the other side……
Speaking up to a ‘tricky’ boss?
Having that tough conversation
Saying ‘enough is enough’ to rise above the battle in the boardroom.?
So today, let’s pause and consider….
How can you bring the same courage into your leadership, your team, and our life?
The Leadership Lessons of Remembrance Day
Stand for Something Bigger
Those we remember didn’t just face challenges; they faced them with purpose. They stood for something larger than themselves, and that gave them strength. In our own roles, leading with a purpose beyond profit or personal gain makes a difference. It’s a reminder that when we lead with heart, we can inspire courage in others, too.
Adapt and Endure
Those we honoured and remembered yesterday had no certainty of success, yet they pressed on. Real courage is often about resilience—finding strength even when there’s no guarantee of victory.?
Rise above the challenge
We face challenges as leaders, it’s not about eliminating setbacks but about enduring them and adapting. It’s in those moments of resilience that true leadership shines.
Take Action, Even When It’s Hard
Courage requires action, even when it’s uncomfortable or risky. It’s easy to lead in times of certainty (do we ever have such times these days?!). Our? leadership is tested when the path forward isn’t clear. We honour our predecessors by remembering their courage and also by their demonstration how they embodied it when things got tough.
Pause and Reflect: How Are You Leading with Courage?
Take a moment to ask yourself….?
What does courage look like for me today??
How can I show my courageous leadership today??
Maybe it’s about having that difficult conversation you have been putting off, tackling a new project, or simply showing up with authenticity and integrity, no matter what.
Let’s honour those who came before us by finding our own ways to lead with courage.
So….
What does courage mean to you, and how are you finding ways to live it in your day-to-day?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.?
Take care
Lizzyx

1 周When I was a cadet years ago, we were doing some climbing on a wall at the outdoor pursuits camp. The teacher who was with us was an utter bag of nerves trying to climb this wall. Some of the other cadets, whilst they were waiting for their turn to climb were talking about a climber they had seen who was using such small handholds and was using just his fingertips. "That's courage," one said. "No," said one of the training team who overheard them, "what your teacher did was courage." Courage isn't about doing something that others think is a bit scary. Courage is doing something that you think is a bit scary, but you still do it. Thanks for the article, Dr Lizzy Bernthal
