How You Can Finesse Anything You Want

How You Can Finesse Anything You Want

At some point during my upbringing I discovered in me something incredible, a superpower that when used effectively, could bring me anything I wanted. Though I wasn't born into money and fame, nor was I physically designed as a Greek God, my superpower has allowed me access to some of the greatest amenities and high level connections that this modern world has to offer.

Finesse is my greatest superpower, and it can be yours too!

To forewarn you, the information I am about to share with you is not for everyone, let me rephrase, there will be those that read this and interpret none of it, for those of you too skeptical to keep an open mind, don't waste your time, but if you're even a little curious, ask yourself.. do you want that raise you've been talking about for months? Do you want the ability to establish a personal connection with anyone you encounter? Do you want the power to get what you desire quicker?

Assert yourself!

Assertiveness implies that you believe to a certain degree that what you want is possible and you're willing to assert yourself onto others to bring your goals to reality.

Believe it or not, I learned the power of assertiveness very early on, in a mall food court no less. My parents would purposely ask my brother and I to grab napkins, chopsticks, extra sauces, and anything else they could think of that would require us to get up and come back with. We would always be annoyed by the requests because that meant we would have to wait in line to eventually ask someone of power to procure our needs. I picked up very quickly however, that if I positioned myself at the register ahead of the person ordering, I could grab the attention of the cashier and have my needs met right away.

Assertiveness isn't the ability to nag everyone's ear off about what you want. Asserting yourself effectively means that you interpret the social construct of the environment you're looking to achieve your goal, and you assert yourself considering the facts.

Persist with your goal!

Persistence is as much a state of mind as it is an art-form, persisting in the underlying belief that you will indeed achieve your goal can be a difficult task with so many hurdles thrown in front of you. The improvisation to match requires creative ability and temperament, you can only see the different paths ahead of you if you aren't seeing red.

The power of persistence can manifest into seemingly impossible outcomes, I see this quite often, more recently in the form of an all expenses paid trip to San Francisco, one of the most beautiful cities I've ever experienced in the world. It was a reality we pitched to a client, we had asserted to the CEO the value our agency would bring if our video production team was flown out (to San Francisco) for a couple of days. After countless hours of planning, the unanswered emails and dropped phone-calls seemed to make this reality less and less believable.

With hope diminishing day after day, our persistence finally paid off, we got in touch with the CEO's assistance who put us on a call with the CEO directly.. a minute long pitch and three days later, the team and I were lugging equipment down Union Square, San Francisco.

Finally, all of your assertiveness and persistence will collapse upon itself without the final secret sauce to finesse.

Empathize with everyone!

Displaying empathy is where a lot of goal setters fall short. More often than not, to achieve your goal in the most efficient manner possible, you'll have to interact with someone, if not multiple someones. People aren't robots here to serve your every request, they have feelings, they have problems, and they leave the world the same way you do. If you approach people with the understanding that working with them in collaboration can help increase the likelihood of succeeding in your goal, you will find a more effective route to achievement.

Though this skill is the hardest to master, once you do, you'll be able to connect with anyone you encounter on a personal level, at that point they'll insist on helping you as you would for them.

Assertiveness, Persistence, and Empathy.

Maintaining the balance, the push and pull of identifying the routes to success, this is what finesse is all about. With practice and temperament, you'll hold the superpower to formulate the realities which you see fit for there are two kinds of people in this world, the ones who wait patiently in line..

And the ones who don't.

Wow! It sounds like we have parents alike, my dad would always tell me to ask for extra napkins at a restaurant.
