How You Can Become A Better Web3 & Crypto Candidate In 2022

I see a lot of questions from candidates and job seekers asking how they can break into the web3 or crypto industry.

Some ask questions about the knowledge or skills they need to develop. Others ask about what types of people have success in the space.

What you have to realize is that the answers depend a little on what type of job you want, and of course, with what company.

Jobs in the web3 space can include anything from technical skills like engineering and development to more creative roles such as marketing and community management.

The broad range of skills in the sector means there is no single answer that can cover everything you need to know.

Nonetheless, we do believe that there are a few basics of crypto and web3 that everyone should learn and understand before diving in.

The first thing we recommend to anyone seeking a career in web3 or crypto is that they hold a genuine interest in some aspect of the industry.

Whether it's blockchain tech, NFTs, crypto, or decentralized finance as a whole. In any career path you want to pursue, having a real passion for the topic will help you stand out and push through.

The second thing is that you’re willing to be paid in cryptocurrency, as much of the sector rewards workers in the workforce in this way.

That’s not to say that no companies in web3 or crypto are willing to pay in fiat, but you will severely hurt your chances by not being willing to accept coins.

Besides, if you’re not willing to handle crypto or tokens yourself, perhaps this is not the industry for you.

Here are a few of the other?basic skills?that you might want to grasp:

  • How to swap tokens on both centralized and decentralized exchanges.
  • How to exchange crypto for fiat and vice versa.
  • Transferring crypto from a cold wallet to a hot wallet, not just from exchanges.
  • Managing private keys safely, and understanding private key best practices.
  • The concepts of staking, mining, and yield-farming.

There is also some?background knowledge?that will help you such as:

  • Understanding what a blockchain is and being able to explain it to others.
  • The differences between major blockchains, such as how they reach consensus.
  • Proof-of-Work, Proof-of-Stake, etc... and, the advantages and disadvantages of each.
  • What decentralized finance is and its benefits to society.
  • What NFTs are, and how they can be used beyond artwork (utility, community, access, etc...)
  • What a DAO is and why they're important.

Here are?some additional?tips that can help:

  • Have a portfolio of crypto or web3-related work. If you have nothing else, perhaps an article you have written with your thoughts on blockchain, or crypto technology.
  • Have a presence on social media related to crypto. Twitter &?Discord are where most of the big-time players hang out.
  • Applying during a bear market can help. This shows your interest goes beyond the hype and proves you aren’t simply FOMOing in during the good times.

When applying or interviewing for a job:

  • Answer all screening questions. Not every candidate does this, and answering every question puts you in a better position than the competition.
  • Understand and be able to communicate your current skill-set and how it can apply to the role.
  • When asked for salary expectations give a range.
  • Do your homework on the company involved.
  • Prepare and stay confident. Most companies won't expect you to have experience in the space, but they will expect you to be a self-starter, passionate and positive.

Hopefully, this entry-level guide helps you to gain some perspective on what makes a good candidate in the web3 and crypto sector.
