How Yoga Can Help When We Are Tested And Triggered
Kristen Boyle, C-IAYT

In these challenging times, we have been tested and triggered more than we normally would be.
And in that, when are nervous system is activated, so it's called sympathetic arousal in the Polyvagal theory, when we're in the activated state, we're unable to truly listen and connect to others. And when we're in that state, things just heighten and elevate and escalate. And so what I want to invite you to do is take a moment to sit tall, perhaps you soften your gaze, perhaps you close your eyes and take those breaths that pull you back to yourself. Notice the shift, the change. I would like to encourage you, rather than looking for those things that trigger you, that activate you, those things that you dislike, begin to turn your attention to those things that make you feel safe, that trigger your nervous system, if you will, into feeling safe.
And you can ask yourself now with that connection to your breath, what makes my body feel safe? The poet Mary Oliver in her famous poem Wild Geese has one phrase that I return to over and over again and that is, "Let the soft animal of your body love what it loves." Take a moment with that. Notice sensations, notice your breath, and see if you can move about your day focusing on those things that trigger you to feel safe.
