How to write a waste minimisation plan

Waste minimisation is as important if not more important than waste prevention. If you can prevent the generation of waste, this is always the first step but in most cases the generation of waste cannot be prevented. Waste minimisation then becomes the most viable option to reduce waste generated.

A process flow is always the first step and involves following the process from the waste generation point to the final waste destination point on site, which often is the waste area. Process flows allow us to understand the status quo, identify the key process areas that require improvement and look for opportunities for re-design.

When completing a process flow, its critical to include all factors affecting the process. This can include but is not limited to number of people in a specific area, the different types of waste containers used in the process, the number of waste containers, the placement and movement of both people and waste containers, any value add noted during the process and the documentation used. A comprehensive process flow will allow more than reduction but also the improvement of the process through digitalisation or cost reduction.

When the flow is complete, then review the plan to determine:

  • Can the process be improved/ streamlined
  • Is waste being handled many times?
  • ?Are correct containers being used, if using a bigger or small one reduces costs – then consider looking at options around this
  • ?Is waste being contaminated?
  • Are there recyclables in the waste?
  • Etc

In my experience, following this simple method WILL result in a reduction of waste generated. And post reduction, you can then move to the next step in your sustainability agenda. Good luck and remember - reduce not abuse!

Interesting read. South Africa has committed to tight time frames when it comes to our Zero waste-to-landfill targets. It is simple to use tools like these that can drive industry and the public sector to greater diversion, improved data collection, and an overall understanding of systems used to handle waste streams.
