I have been in the recruitment and human resources fields for more than 13 years, and I have encounter and reviewed thousands of resumes and CVs worldwide. I wanted to share what I have learned from this experience in a few steps….
1- Be simple and meaningful:
I have seen applicants and job seekers with 5 to 15 resume pages, and I understand and respect their experience and the value they will bring to the position or the employer. Still, this method is outdated and not relative to our fast-paced working environment. So, my piece of advice is to write at least 1-3 pages only, not more. This will give a positive reflection and impression to the recruiters. Furthermore, don’t complicate the content and the info of your resume. Make it simple and understandable to everyone. I always say, be to the point; what I mean by that is to be relative and connected as much as you can to the position you are applying for.
2- List your accomplishments and achievements:
Simply speaking, list and shed light on your current and past work experience’s achievements and accomplishments. Make it shine and attractive to all recruiters by indicating and emphasizing all your success stories. I say this because many applicants or job seekers are listing their jobs’ duties only, without referring to any achievements, and I don’t consider it a colossal mistake. Still, I would say this is one of the gaps most applicants and job seekers have.
3- Be honest and sincere:
Unfortunately, I have seen some applicants or job seekers are faking their resumes to get picked up for an interview. This is not acceptable, and remember, we as recruiters or hiring managers can distinguish if the applicant is faking or telling the truth. It is so evident for experienced recruiters and hiring managers to figure this out. So, my piece of advice for you, be honest with yourself first and keep working, keep developing, and keep pushing to get what you want in a sincere way.
4- What is the best type of CV/resume format?
There is no perfect or unified resume format in the world; you are free to select any CV/Resume format, but it must have the following info and structure:
- Name/contact info
- Professional Profile – write a simple and meaningful paragraph to show who you are to the recruiter at first glance. It is like an elevator pitch scenario.
- Education
- Professional certifications
- Professional Work Experience
