Crafting an effective resume can make all the difference in securing your next project. Here are some tips and examples to help you create a winning freelance content writer or copywriter resume.
Let’s get straight to the point. Here’s a quick list of what to include in your freelance content writer or copywriter resume:
- Start with your name and job title
- Add contact info. Include your email, contact number, website address portfolio link, and LinkedIn profile Link?
- Write a professional summary or objective (something like what you’ve mentioned in your LinkedIn summary). Your objective statement should be concise and highlight your area of expertise. For example, "Experienced freelance content writer with expertise in SEO and digital marketing" or "Creative copywriter specializing in brand messaging and storytelling."
- Now the most crucial part: Work Experience. List your freelancer work like a job. Add employer/client/business name, start and end date of the project, deliverables, etc. Example: Freelance SEO Writer, XYZ Digital Marketing (May 2021 – April 2022)
- QUANTIFY your results whenever possible. Add metrics. Example: Wrote 05 articles for XYZ which increased the organic website traffic by 100-125% or ranked the content #1 on Google.
- You can also add a separate heading for “Niches” or “Formats”.
- Add education.
- Highlight skills. Skills related to your freelance work, e.g., research, SEO, fact-checking, proofreading and editing, communication skills, marketing, time management, etc.?Tip: Leave the experience and skills that don’t back up your freelance work or the position you are applying for.
- Under "Achievements", you can add Certifications or Courses you've taken. For example, digital marketing certificate, SEO certificate, editing course, etc.
- Add a couple of testimonials.
- You can also add the software and tools you can use (relevant ones only)
- Include relevant keywords as many clients use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to scan resumes for specific keywords. Make sure your resume includes relevant keywords such as "SEO," "digital marketing," "content strategy," and "copywriting."
- Tailor the resume to the job. Include keywords mentioned in the job description
- Don’t include everything. Only the relevant stuff
- Use white spaces wherever possible. Enhance readability
- Limit everything to 1-2 pages (500-600 words). Save the details for your portfolio
- Don’t forget to add your portfolio link and LinkedIn profile
- Use bullet points under each heading and work experience
- Please avoid Canva templates. Prefer PDF or .doc file only as these are scannable by the job scanners, plus ATS-friendly. Use any online job scanner.
- Avoid fluff and buzzwords
- No need to mention your GPA unless you got an excellent one
- Add language proficiency if the employer prefers that
- Include a short and personalized cover letter with every job you are applying for. Employers like it. Describe why you’d be the perfect fit for the role. Keep it short (around 300 words)
- You can also send a follow-up email in case you don’t hear from the client
