How to: Write a Goodbye Post on LinkedIn

How to: Write a Goodbye Post on LinkedIn

So, last week I asked you guys about the LinkedIn "goodbye post" after job loss in a poll, and many of you felt like it was a good idea....

...and I agree! In fact, I did exactly that back in 2016 and it helped me to land a fantastic new role quicker than ever!

But before you click post, let me share some quick strategic tips for crafting your words wisely!

1. Leave (and post) gracefully.

You may be tempted to air your grievances, but I'd definitely keep the focus on YOU and your accomplishments and where you'd like to end up. Think of this almost like a press release, with the goal of reaching that next awesome employer.

If you want to eventually share more about a negative experience, I'm not necessarily against it, and I've shared my own with very limited details, but a goodbye post just isn't the spot.

2. Grieve before you post.

This goes hand in hand with tip #1. Don't share when you are angry. Writing a goodbye post on LinkedIn should be done when you feel clear headed and ready to move forward into the next chapter.

3. Thank the people that helped you during your experience.

If there are people that made your time more enjoyable, share your gratitude for their support and tag them.

4. Share some of the accomplishments you're most proud of.

This is the time to brag on yourself a little bit, it shows confidence, and confidence is a magnet for new opportunities.

5. Be SUPER clear on what you want.

Now that you've nailed your goodbye post, be crystal clear about which opportunities you are open to and/or how people reading can help you. Remember that it's not just potential employers looking at your post, but also friends/followers/colleagues that want to help you in your journey, so make it easy for them to!

If you know somebody that's recently lost their job or left their position, or even shut down a business, share this little guide with them!

Thanks for your advice! I am going to write a goodbye post and found this. I also tried to find your original post in 2016, scrolled down your activities, and faced that LinkedIn has a limit of posts that can be discovered :) The last one I can view is [1], and as I read in [2], it is needed to scroll more in the history :) [1] https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/michaelaalexis_alright-mortgage-lead-solutions-i-dont-activity-6197825399083270144-R2IT [2] https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/michaelaalexis_on-this-day-one-year-ago-my-linkedin-fairytale-activity-6230411417036562433-Qlog

YES! Love all of this! All of them were considerations before writing my own goodbye post a few weeks ago. I fell short on several points?especially "be clear about what you want," since I wasn't, and still am not, super clear just yet?but I still feel it worked out well, and definitely didn't offend my former employer (we may actually do some work together in the future!). https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/christinegritmon_layoffs-announcement-personalbrand-activity-7026562318033395712-zYL6?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop
