I’ve written over 1000 emails in the last 1.5 years.
And went from writing a decent email in 1-hour to writing a delightful email in less than 15 minutes.
And I believe the system that my subconscious uses every time I’m hammering away at my keyboard to crank out emails, may help you write one in at most 27 minutes… even if you haven’t written any email before.
And today I’m going to share it with you.
Step 1: Create the outline first (8 minutes)
“Duh!”
You’ve heard this ‘amazing idea’ at least a thousand times thrown around all over the internet- “Create the outline first”
But I’m going to go a bit deeper, and get a bit specific about how to create an outline for Emails:
(It’s an exercise part, so make sure you take some notes… IF you ever want to write an email)
The steps are to find quick answers to these 3 questions:
- What action do you want someone to take at the end of the email?
-Click the link to enroll for a workshop?
-Reply for more details about your program?
-Click the link to visit your program’s sales page?
- What are the benefits someone’s going to get by taking action?
-What’s the topic of your workshop? What problem do they solve?
-Or your program?
- What’s the “80%” of your email going to be about? A story? A list? “How-to”? Your point of view on something?
-If it’s a story… Write down “Who- characters”, “Where- place”, and “What- the event, and the emotions”
-If it’s a list… Write down the headings
-If it’s your point of view… Write down ‘What’s the topic?’, ‘What everyone else thinks?’, and ‘What do I think?’
-If it’s “How-to”... Write down “Who’s the victim?”, “What’s the problem?”, and “How to solve it?”
You just need answers to the above three questions to almost finish your outline.
A couple more things to write out before you get to the next step are…
-A SPECIFIC detail(s) you want to add- Something you definitely want to include in that particular email
-A rough subject line
-Sign-out phrase
-Any photo/gif/video you want to add
Next.
Step: 2- Stretch out the Outlines (12 minutes)
It’s time to stretch out the phrases into sentences. To take the main points and write them in a way so that one can tell, by just scanning your email, what this all is about.
You can do it in three simple steps:
-First, write out the topic of the email- Story, How-to, POV, Lists
-Then, use a proper segue with sentences like- “And that brings me to the point…”, “That reminds me of…”, “On a related note:”, “Speaking of which…”
-And then insert the CTA
That’s almost everything you’d need to complete the first draft of your email. And then you get to the final stage of writing an email:
Step: 3- Finishing touches (7 minutes)
-Come up with the first line- Necessary because you want to hook the reader in before they get bored, and skip.
-Come up with a subject line and preview line- Write a curiosity-based subject line, but make sure your email body pays it off.
-Read the email aloud. And fix the words or phrases where you get stuck. Or where it sounds “awkward”
-Fix the visuals of your emails- Paragraph length, underline, boldening, etc. Careful while doing this. You want to highlight the “highlights” and not useless phrases or lines.
-Use some slang or favorite phrases if you want to
-Super important- Go through the technical details. The name of your program, the deadline date, you get the idea.
And there you have it, beautiful fella.
Oh, I almost forgot the sales pitch:
