Today I'm going to guide you through writing and formatting a resume using ChatGPT. We'll also cover how to export it as a doc or PDF.
How to Write and Format a Resume Using ChatGPT: A Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Gather Existing Resume Materials
Start by locating an old resume for reference. If you don't have one handy, you can export your LinkedIn profile as a PDF to use as a starting point.
Step 2: Identify Key Resume Elements
Before diving in, let's discuss what's essential to include in your resume. As someone with a recruiting background and experience in tech, I'll share insights that can make your resume stand out.
Step 3: Initialize ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT, ideally using the GPT-4 version. Ensure chat history and data training are enabled. However, be cautious with your data – avoid sharing your phone number, address, or email.
Step 4: Create a Resume Template
Use this prompt for ChatGPT: "Pretend to be an expert at formatting word documents and help me create a template resume for job applications." Opt for a simple font like Times New Roman in 12 point size, with your name possibly in 14 point size for emphasis.
Step 5: Incorporate Design Elements
Include brand colors of the company you're applying to. For instance, if their brand color is deep hunter green, try to incorporate that into your resume's design.
Step 6: Add Personal Information
Include your name and a placeholder phone number. Remember to prioritize privacy – only list your city and state.
Step 7: Include Contact Information
Add your LinkedIn URL and personal website if it's relevant. Be discerning about including social media profiles – only add them if they are pertinent to the job you're applying for.
Step 8: Writing a Resume Summary (Optional)
If you're early in your career or need to fill space, add a brief summary. For example, "Stand-up comedian with a background in recruiting."

Step 9: Detailing Work Experience
List your job title, company name, and a brief company description. Detail your responsibilities and achievements in bullet points, focusing on relevance and impact.
Step 10: Education and Skills
Mention your educational background and list relevant skills. Organize skills into categories for clarity, such as general skills and specific software proficiencies.
Step 11: Formatting Tips
Pay attention to formatting for readability and professionalism. Use clear headings, concise bullet points, and ensure the overall layout is easy to follow.
Step 12: Exporting Your Resume
Ask ChatGPT to format and export your resume as a doc or PDF. Review the exported document for any needed tweaks or final touches.
Conclusion
You now have a customized resume template ready for different job applications. Stay tuned for more specific advice on resume writing and advanced formatting techniques in my upcoming videos.
Remember, this guide is a starting point – feel free to adjust and personalize your resume to best showcase your skills and experience. Happy job hunting!
