How to Write a Book in 12-Weeks

I’ve had some people question that writing a book in 12 weeks is possible, saying that writing a ‘good’ book takes a lot more time or you need to use a Ghost Writer.

I actually disagree with this and here is why...

Who exactly decides what a ‘good’ book is? You, your peers (this is one of the biggest fears, to be judged by peers!) or your readers?

You see, if you are in business and want to write a book it makes sense to write about your business expertise and have the book achieve a very specific outcome for you.

Of course, you could write fiction but that’s a totally different area of expertise and a different way to write and that is NOT my expertise to help you with!

?

My expertise is to help savvy people in business write a book that helps you achieve a business outcome and so we start with a strategy in mind so that both, you the writer and your reader achieve a result.

?

And a key part most people don’t realize is, that every well-known non-fiction book has a strategy at its core.

?

For example, every politician’s biography or a celebrities’ book, is written with a specific, strategic outcome in mind.

?

Now you might think, sure, those well-known people also don’t need to worry about how long it takes to get their book written and published, because a lot of the work is probably done by others than the author, (probably a ghost writer) and you may be correct.

?

So let me share two things you need so that YOU can write a book in 12-Weeks, a ‘good’ book, specifically when your topic is related to your business or your expertise …(and people who get my help, don’t need a ‘ghost writer’ to achieve that)

?

Number One

Start with planning what you want your book to do for you?

What result do you want your book to achieve for you?

?

For example, let’s say you’re a LinkedIn Marketing Coach and are asked the ‘outcome’ question several times over, and finally realize that you want your book to help you establish your unique expertise in helping HR recruiters use LinkedIn and get those recruiters as your clients.

?

Being clear on wanting to achieve that outcome helps you then to map out exactly what needs to go into your book and what not.

That’s the chapter outline done and allows you to estimate how much time you’ll need to get the content for each chapter done.

Some of the content you may already have written and some you may need to write but you’ll never need to write ‘100,000’ words for the sake of writing, because you have clearly defined chapters and all it takes is to bring together the content that matches what that chapter is to be about. (…besides, recruiters don’t have time to read a 100,000 word book!)

?

Number Two

?When you let people know the details of what you do in a way that is not overwhelming, but enough for them to see what your method involves and in a way the reader is able to thoughtfully consider whether it is something that aligns with them or not, you can write a ‘good’ book.

This means writing without technical or industry ‘jargon’ but in a demonstrative way that your reader understands and with language your reader knows and uses.

This does NOT take years to do, because it’s information you talk about and use every day with clients.

Writing this way respects the reader where they are at and shows you know and understand them and their needs.

For example, Health & Wellness Coaches, in particular perhaps, Naturopaths' and Nutritionists, might want to share a message about how, what women in their pre-menopause years eat, has a direct influence on how focused they stay in their thinking at work.

?

When I’ve worked with Naturopaths' and Nutritionists (or any Health or Wellness practitioner with a specific area of expertise) to guide them to attract the very specific readership they would like to work with as clients, with their book, this outcome can be easily achieved with planning BEFORE writing starts.

So, for example, that might be professional pre-menopausal women that you’d like to attract to become your clients.

In such a scenario the practitioner may choose to use the interview style chapter framework.

?

This involves perhaps for the author to interview some of her clients and use recordings and transcription to write the chapters.

?

This process can take as little as one day and the editing of the content into chapters and adding other existing content to each chapter, might be a week’s work, as long as the chapter framework was planned FIRST.

?

So, you can see, writing a ‘good’ book is definitely possible withing 12-Weeks and you don’t necessarily need to hire a ghost writer to do the work for you.

BUT…there are a few more details around engaging a ‘ghost writer’ and if that’s of interest to you, join me THIS WEEK FRIDAY for 30min, at my online event:

12 weeks? Wow, that's really short and if it's do-able, it's actually great cause it's so much more motivating to do this in 12 weeks rather than 1 year!
