How to Write Better Prompts for ChatGPT and Get Amazing Responses

ChatGPT is an AI model that can generate text based on prompts, which are instructions or queries that you enter into the interface. Prompts can be used for various purposes, such as writing, marketing, education, customer service, and more. However, not all prompts are equally effective. Some prompts may result in vague, irrelevant, or inaccurate responses, while others may produce more specific, helpful, and creative outputs.

Here is a comparison of some examples of good and bad prompts for ChatGPT, along with some tips on how to improve them:

Bad Prompt 1:

Write a blog post about ChatGPT.

Why It’s Bad:

Too broad and vague. ChatGPT may not know what to focus on, what tone to use, or who the target audience is.

How to improve it:

Provide more context and details, such as the topic, purpose, angle, and length of the blog post.

Improved Version:

Write a 500-word blog post about how ChatGPT can help marketers generate engaging social media captions.

Bad Prompt 2:

Generate a list of potential career paths for a history student.

Why It’s Bad:

Too general and simplistic. ChatGPT may come up with a variety of generic responses, but they may not be relevant or personalized to the specific student.

How to improve it:

Include more information about the student’s interests, skills, goals, and preferences.

Improved Version:

Generate a list of potential career paths for a history student who is interested in the early modern period, has a good understanding of statistics and data analysis, and wants to explore options in education or consulting.

Bad Prompt 3:

Rewrite this sentence in a more formal way: Hey, what’s up?

Why It’s Bad:

Too short and simple. ChatGPT may not have enough context to understand the meaning and intention of the sentence.

How to improve it:

Provide more background information, such as the situation, the relationship between the speakers, and the desired tone.

Improved Version:

Rewrite this sentence in a more formal way, assuming that it is part of an email from a student to a professor, asking about the status of an assignment: Hey, what’s up?

Bad Prompt 4:

Write a sales pitch for Product X.

Why It’s Bad:

Too generic and bland. ChatGPT may not know what Product X is, what its features and benefits are, or who the target customers are.

How to improve it:

Provide more details about the product, such as its name, description, unique selling points, and value proposition.

Improved Version:

Write a sales pitch for OwlyWriter, an AI tool that instantly generates captions and content ideas for every social media network.
